Stitch by Stitch: From Basics to Design

In our Sewing & Textile Arts class, we turn fabric into functional art. Whether you are a total beginner who has never threaded a needle or an aspiring designer looking to create your own clothes, this class provides the technical foundation and creative freedom to bring your fabric ideas to life.

With a focus on sustainability and craftsmanship, we explore how to manipulate textiles through both hand-sewing and machine techniques.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the term, students will be able to:

• Master Machine & Tool Basics: Confidently operate a sewing machine, wind bobbins, and understand the specific uses of various shears, pins, and measuring tools.

• Execute Essential Stitches: Demonstrate proficiency in hand-stitches (running, back-stitch, and blanket stitch) and machine seams.

• Read & Modify Patterns: Understand how to follow a commercial pattern and make simple alterations for a custom fit.

• Fabric Science: Identify different textile types (woven vs. knit) and learn which fabrics work best for specific projects.

• Complete Personal Projects: Create 2–3 finished items per term, such as tote bags, zip pouches, or simple elastic-waist garments.

Class Options at Bay Terrace

• Youth Sewing (Ages 7–12): We start with "softie" plushies and small accessories to build hand-eye coordination and safety habits.

• Teen & Adult Fashion: Focuses on garment construction, upcycling old clothes, and advanced finishing techniques.

Sewing requires focused attention and space for machines. To ensure a safe and productive environment, all sewing sessions are scheduled by appointment.

• Small Groups (2–3 students): Perfect for learning together on the machines.

• Individual Lessons: Ideal for complex projects like dressmaking or pattern drafting.
