Hello! My name is Yu-Fan, and these are my memories of the military dependents' village. I am a third-generation descendant who grew up in the United States. The only thing that I have in connection to the village is my name. My mother said that she and my father, one being a "Mainlander" and the other a "Taiwanese local," were often referred to as "Yutou(Taro)" and "Fanshu(Sweet Potato)." Hence, they named me "Yu-Fan," playing on the homophonic sounds, hoping that I would not forget my roots...
Note: The outline of Taiwan resembles the shape of a sweet potato, hence Local Taiwanese people often refer to themselves as "sweet potatoes." In contrast, they use the term "taro" to refer to Mainlanders who moved to Taiwan after the end of World War II. For example, older Mainland soldiers are customarily called "old taros." Some offspring of marriages between Taiwanese and Mainlanders are playfully referred to as "taro sweet potatoes."
In my memories, there are some visual materials left by that era and the vocal creations created by the younger generation about that time. There is also the large table of "military dependents' village dishes" my grandmother prepared every year when I went back for the Chinese New Year...

This diversity not only forms a condensed map of Chinese cuisine but also serves as a stage for culinary masters to showcase their skills. In the aspects of daily life, food takes the top priority. Through carefully crafted rhyming riddles centered around the essential theme of "food and drink," you will unveil the mysteries of life in the military dependents' village.
I found a cassette tape among my grandmother's belongings. It tells the story of how a group of people came from the mainland China to Taiwan and took root there. I have never seen these people with my own eyes, so my memories are fragmented and scattered, yet unique...

What is Stage Reading?
It's when actors perform with scripts in hand. Despite holding the script, there's no shortage of emotions and tension in the characters. Because they have the script, both the audience and the actors are clear that it's a "performance." Actors holding scripts can relax and navigate between the roles and themselves more freely during this performance. Audiences can clearly see the characters, be led by their experiences and emotions, and also occasionally witness the actors stepping out of character to speak directly with the atmosphere of the scene. This is a very organic way of performing, and it maximizes the direct connection between the historical past, which has long gone but still lives on, and the audience on stage.
My mother often says that for my grandmother’s generation, regret flows in their blood. They crossed the channel and started a new life, but it was beyond their control. So she name me "Yu-Fan," with a meaning of "hope." She wanted to give me a sail so that when I grow up, I can steer my own ship to where I want to go and do what I want to do, living a life without regrets. I hope that through the craft T-shirt workshop, we can all come together and mend the regrets of that era with our own hands…
