ONLINE SPEAKERS: HOW TO PRESENT ONLINE
ONLINE SPEAKERS: HOW TO PRESENT ONLINE
Before reading this page, it is essential you look at our information on attending the online conference and using the online event platform.
Preparing to present your paper online
We recommend you have a webcam and an external microphone to present your paper. You can also use and share slides as part of the presentation. You should test your equipment beforehand over a Zoom call with a friend. If there are technical problems or time is spent resolving a technical issue, there will not be additional time available to make up for it or another opportunity to present your paper. You should also ensure you will be presenting from somewhere quiet, with a stable internet connection with a good bandwidth. Just to reiterate, we highly recommend you testing your equipment in advance of your live presentation.
Presenting your paper online
Once the event has started, all sessions will be available for you to see in your Zoom app (see online attendance guidance). At least ten minutes before you are due to speak, you should join your panel session via the zoom app as you would any other session. When it is your turn to speak, our team will promote you to a speaker, which will enable you to share your webcam and presentation with both venue and online attendees.
Make sure your display name on Zoom is the name you have registered with the conference, this is so the team can identify you easily. To do this, click the ellipsis near your screen name (...) and a pop-up box will appear where you can update the information.
The Zoom app will inform you when you have been promoted to a speaker and when it has been requested that you share your audio and video
Once you have delivered your paper, you will have the opportunity to be asked questions both by people in the venue at Exeter, and by online attendees. Questions at the venue will be asked via microphone and questions from online attendees will either be asked directly over the call or our team will read them out for you from the Q&A.Â
If you are using a PowerPoint or other slide-based presentation, you will need to share your computer screen. Please ensure you understand and have tested how to share your screen via zoom. Some guidance on this is available here.
