Certamen is a game of fast recall of facts about classical civilization and its peoples, languages, and cultures. It allows students to demonstrate their knowledge of the ancient peoples, languages, and cultures, and the relationships between those topics and the modern world.
Spirit is a contest at State and National Conventions where competitors create cheers and then—literally—scream themselves hoarse.
At Nationals, this can involve over a thousand students making the auditorium shake for almost twenty minutes non-stop.
Unified movements, such as clapping, turning and swaying are also allowed, and are often utilized in order to make the chapter/state to look more in sync with its other members.
The Costume Contest is available at Fall Festivus, State, and National Convention, with little deviance between the rules.
Spectacular costumes have been seen throughout the history of the NJCL, ranging from perfect Roman legionary uniforms to fantastic costumes of Dido.
These tests come in two different types: The National Tests during the year and the Academic Tests at conventions.
Testing during the year includes the National Latin Exam (NLE), and others, to be found here and here.
Academic testing at conventions covers all material that the school year tests do. At Fall Festivus this year, we have a single test, Academic Decathlon. This will be slightly different and probably slightly easier than the National Convention Decathlon.
