“New imperialism”—a time of accelerated colonial and territorial acquisition by Western European empires, the
United States, and Japan—took place between 1870 and the onset of World War I. A consequence of rapidly
industrializing nation-states, “new imperialism” was more extensive (in terms of territory) and extensive (in terms
of resource extraction, involvement in region, investment, etc) than earlier forms of colonization. During this time,
European, American and Japanese imperial expansion focused on the formation of colonies in Africa, Southeast
Asia and the Pacific as well as a more indirect expansion and influence in Asia and the Middle East. There was
not one set model for imperialism: nations had different levels of direct and indirect involvement in their colonies
and overseas territories.

I created this to replace the "Scramble for Africa" simulations because I like the "game" concept but also felt it was inappropriate. In this game, the land is a fictional island, Acirfa, which actually does mean "blesser of the rains." The debrief is very important, so make sure you leave ample time. I have 7 rounds, but you may not get through all 7. 5 rounds should be sufficient. Groups receive a country role and resource maps. Similar to Europeans, they often ignore the map of ethnic groups in Acirfa. This becomes an important discussion topic in the debrief. The instructions Google Doc includes different outcomes for each round. You can easily change these depending on your class size and number of rounds. If you want to play more rounds, you might want to allow only 1 resource square claim per group, per round. You can also change the scenarios if desired.
