The expansion of states and empires increased both global connections and conflicts. Empires were increasingly maintained through military and economic means, and the new global economy was based on free market capitalism. But changes undermined global stability. Tensions mounted in Europe as competition grew and manifested in complicated alliance systems. The Ottoman Empire grew weak, and revolutions would rock Mexico, China, and Russia. The 20th century saw two world wars, a global Depression and a global "Cold War," proxy wars and imperial backlash against empire. It was a century of upheaval and change that would shape the modern world and leave no region untouched.
