Using the information learned throughout the modules, you will ask yourself how we can help improve the Canadian sports community today and in the future.
You will create an advertising campaign (as outlined by your classroom teacher) highlighting a specific social justice issue that needs to be addressed and improved within the Canadian athletics community. Your campaign should promote an action plan of sorts to begin tackling the problem. You might be inspired by a personal experience, an issue in your sports community, or an event in Canadian athletics. Perhaps you will learn about an interesting event in these modules and want to do more in-depth research. As mentioned in the modules, there are far more examples of social justice issues in sports than those covered in the slideshows. Do some research and get inspired. Whatever you're most passionate about will usually lead to the most dedicated work and concrete action!
You should consider your initial brainstorming for this campaign as a big question. That means you want to ask your audience a question about how we can positively impact athletics in Canada, and use your knowledge and research skills to find answers that you can share through your campaign messages (e.g., commercials, pamphlets, ads, websites, social media posts, etc.).
For example, these modules were made with a big question in mind: How have historical connections between society and sport resulted in the Canadian sports community that we know today?
As you can probably tell by the extensive content provided to answer the big question above, these questions should also have big, detailed answers. They should not be yes or no questions as they require a lot of thought, research, and reflection.
You may want to focus on something like:
How can the inclusion of female athletes in professional sports positively impact the next generation?
How can the improvement of mental health knowledge lead to more successful youth sports teams?
How can we help end systemic racism through policies in our local sports programs?
The above questions are up for grabs, but make sure to discuss your big question/topic with your teacher before you begin. The modules provide you with an overview of the evolution of sports in Canada as well as resources to do further research. Now we want you to ask a question that will motivate you to find answers.
You are to consider all aspects of society influenced by the world of sports.
You must include:
Accurate information about the social justice issue you are highlighting
Relevant historical examples that educate the public on our society's past mistakes in athletics
'Calls to action' that will provide the public with steps toward inclusion and acceptance
You have creative freedom when designing your campaign, so long as you can explain how the advertising choices you make will accurately inform, inspire, and empower your audience. You should be able to explain who your audience is and how you might reach them based on the knowledge gained in your business modules. Media used in your campaign should first be approved by your teacher.
Please consult your classroom teacher to discuss grades and weighting for this assignment.
You'll want to visit this assignment page throughout your module journey. This way, you can review the requirements and expectations which will help when developing your big question. Reviewing the final assignment periodically will also help you take note of important information related to your big question.
