I joined Civically Engaged Scholars to think outside myself and my academics. Community-engaged learning enables a connection between my academics and Deaf community concerns. By serving and socializing with the Deaf community my knowledge is enriched and I am better informed about the social issues they face. As I spend time in the Deaf community, I will better understand their culture, perspective, and language and have opportunities to develop a more cultural relativistic mindset. Nourishing my relationship with the Deaf community will show I am an ally and allow us to become more united in purpose.
