Consider ways you can help students and families connect. Maybe schedule a outdoor time at a park for students to interact in person for those that are comfortable with it.
Coordinate with other class parents to recognize the teacher on their birthday and during Teacher Appreciation week. See Staff Favorite Things on Membership Toolkit for some of their favorite things and wishlist items for the classroom.
A number of teachers/staff have summer/early fall birthdays, so half birthdays can be celebrated instead. We like the teacher to know that that class is thinking of them on their special day, but it doesn't have to be anything elaborate. It could be a cup of coffee, a bouquet of flowers, homemade cards, etc.
Note that there is a separate Staff Appreciation committee that uses PTO funds to plan meals and gifts for teachers during Teacher Appreciation week. We have been assured by teachers and administration that notes and handmade items given by the kids are really the ones that create lasting memories and have most meaning for the teachers and staff.
If asking families to contribute to a gift, please make sure it is very clear that giving is optional and sign the card from the whole class, regardless of who contributes.
