WHO: 3rd/4th graders at Bringhurst. Class size limited to 12.
WHAT: This is a multiplication *enrichment* class designed primarily for 3rd/4th graders. We will practice mental math with big numbers, solve logic puzzles, learn problem solving strategies, and explore prime numbers. Along the way we'll do lots and lots of multiplication with puzzles, dice, games, and the Beast Academy 3B workbook. To get the most out of the class and not get overwhelmed, students should be consistently accurate with their single-digit multiplication facts. Students who enjoy math but are not fluent (fast+accurate) with their facts are welcome to join, but families must commit to practicing facts daily outside of class (I will help families generate a study plan and suggest resources and specific approaches for their student. I'm also willing to help troubleshoot the plan so we can get them where they need to be each week.)
WHEN: Dates are Wednesdays from 1:15-2:15 on Bringhurst campus from Jan 11th to Mar 1st. Students will gather right after school in front of the C buidling and have a quick snack & use the bathroom before starting class at 1:15.
COST/VOLUNTEER Request: Suggested donation of $50 which covers copies, materials, Beast Academy workbook and snacks. Also, I request that each family volunteer an adult for one session. (Adult can be parent/gaurdian/family friend etc.) Think of it as a long lunch break! Bringhurst siblings may come on the volunteer's workday if necessary.
Because I understand parents have varying levels of math comfort, I will do my best to match volunteers to their comfort level of participation. I also give volunteers a head's up on what will happen in class that day before they arrive.
ABOUT THE TEACHER: I'm a parent of two kids at Bringhurst in 3rd and 6th grade. Many, many years ago I taught 4th/5th grade and middle school math. I've helped with Math Club at Azevada since my oldest began school, and hope to get Math Club Activities started up at Bringhurst as well.
