Urie Bronfenbrenner believed that children learned within a series of systems. These systems involved their families and immediate environment and community, the connections made between those entities, and the societal environment they live in (Wixson, 2021). We want to foster the relationships within these systems by including the individualities of our families in the programs. This includes home languages, community involvement, and cultural experiences. Our goal is to include our communities in our classroom activities and experiences to help our children feel safe and secure every day.
Research shows that intentional teaching and developmentally appropriate practices cultivate culturally relevant, anti-bias environments (Curenton & Iruka, 2024). These practices are present in all of our classrooms, and benefit ALL children. When you visit our center, you will see materials that represent the diverse families in our program, including the different languages spoken. Each classroom will have spaces for children to play and relax on their own, or with groups, and make different choices about what they do and where they play. Including children in the decision processes allows them to feel included in their environment and education.
