Bill Waldren's page

The archaeological museum in Deià was founded in 1962, by the charismatic archaeologist and painter, William Henre Waldren (1924-2003).

Waldren fell in love with Mallorca, on a vacation in 1953 when he was studying arts in Paris, France. He came here as often as possible, and slowly, he went from being mainly dedicated to painting to being full-time amateur archaeologist.

In the start 60’s, Waldren made some break-through finds in the caves of Son Matge, Son Ferrandell and Son Muleta, where he discovered the remains of the Balearic dwarf goat, ‘Myotragus Balearicus’ (photo). This suddenly gave him a name in the world of archaeologists world wide.

He designed and built the house of the museum himself. As a member of the ‘EarthWatch’, Waldren found many volunteers to help him maintain and run the museum.
