September 2001

I returned to Deià In September of 2001 to help staff a conference on Islands In Prehistory. As we were preparing for the conference attendees to start arriving, the news of the assault on the World Trade Center spread around the building, and everything came to a halt.  But there were people arriving, there was a cocktail party to kick It off with Spanish royalty arriving, and somehow we got It all going.  Many speakers couldn't come, but It was In a beautiful palace/convention center at the Monastery of Miramar. No planes were flying so we were stuck there, for the moment. Returning home was a jolt of reality.
