  • Do you feel frustrated and irritable when others do things incorrectly or differently than you would do them?

  • Do you feel like a failure when you don't get something right, or the way you feel it should be?

  • Do you feel anxious whenever you are incorrect, late, or don't meet expectations of yourself or others?

  • Do you throw things out and start over if you make a mistake?

  • Do you feel you're the only one who doesn't have it all together?

  • Do you have to do it all yourself to make sure it's done right?

  • Do you put things off, or make sure you have everything lined up and ready before you start?

  • Do you move right from one project or task to the next, without celebrating your achievements?

These are all signs of perfectionism, and they can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicide.  Perfectionism is not (yet) a diagnosis of it's own, but it's incredibly important to address it to improve your mental health and overall level of functioning and enjoyment of life.

In order to remove that heavy weight of living up to impossible standards off of your shoulders and actually begin to have fun, you need to discover your underlying feelings such as fear, insecurity, unworthiness, and low self-esteem. The negative self-thoughts can be replaced, and the unconscious belief system can be changed. The specific fears can be addressed with exposure therapy and you can begin to experience joy. You can experience freedom from guilt, shame, tension, and frustration. Let's work together to change the way you see the world, others, and yourself, reduce your stress level, and get you onto a path toward something positive rather than just avoiding the negative.
