Summary
With this project the BG/BRG Judenburg, an academic high school for students aged 10 -18 reacts to the latest changes in the Austrian educational system. Year ago the BG/BRG Judenburg introduced classes in which certain subjects have been taught bilingually. The demand for bilingual teachers in a wide variety of subjects has been constantly growing and with this rising demand also the need for further professional education in the field of English language and CLIL methodology and didactics. Within the two years' lifetime of this project 16 CLIL teachers and 2 administrative employess will have the opportunity to participate in several one weeks training courses based on professional CLIL and language trainings and how to teach techniques and language curriculum relevant topics.
All trainings will be focused on two main areas:
1.) Exploration of CLIL didactics and methodologies in non-language classes (e.g. Geography,
Physics, Chemistry etc.)
2.) Improvement of personal and professional language skills (language skills in reading, writing,
speaking, vocabulary, pronunciation etc.)
In these courses CLIL teachers acquire methods, techniques and didactic material for activities that are adaptable to a wide range of lower and higher grade CLIL students and to different teaching situations. But not only the acquisition of new methods, techniques and skills plays an important role, it is also the exchange of experiences and the reflection on teaching behavior in CLIL classes between teachers of different countries that will bring the participation in this courses along. After the trainings teachers will inform other CLIL teachers in internal school meetings about the contents of the courses and pass on material and information about the course. Futhermore, gained methodological and didactic knowledge will also be passed on to other language and CLIL teachers in order to provide them with new input and ideas of how to teach.
This project will lead to:
- an enormous improvement of staff competences and language skills in the field of CLIL teaching
- an exploration and introduction of new curriculum relevant teaching aspects and authentic topics in CLIL classes
- a teachers' reflection on the organization of CLIL teaching guided by teaching experts
- an implementation of modern CLIL teaching methods and IT-tools to approach more students with different learning needs
- widening teachers' social and cultural horizions and their intercultural skills, which will have an
impact on their teaching performance in Austria.
Key Areas of the Project:
In order to enlarge their teaching and language competences 16 teachers and 2 administrative employees (AE) would like to participate in language and CLIL teaching courses for staff and teachers for secondary and high schools. In these courses teachers acquire methods, techniques and didactic material for activities that are adaptable to a wide range of lower and higher grade students and for different language and CLIL teaching situations. But not only the acquisition of new methods, techniques and skills for CLIL plays an important role, it is also the exchange of experiences and the reflection on teaching behavior between teachers of different countries that will bring the participation in this courses along. Since the BG/BRG Judenburg has been running several international projects and would like to continue, the amount of written and spoken communication in English has risen during the lastseveral years. Thus, administration plans to offer further English language training to AEs in order to optimize management and communicative processes in the field of international projects at school.
The school plans for language and CLIL teachers and AE comprise 3 main ideas:
-The first plan is the improvement of language and CLIL teaching skills in order to improve teaching quality in higher classes at school to prepare students for the final exams.
-The second plan is to provide further and constant qualifications for language teachers to support CLIL teachers in their work in bilingual classes.
-The third plan is to furnish AEs with language skills so that they have improved professional qualifications to carry out curriculum based international projects like Erasmus+ KA2 projects, eTwinning projects and "Caretakers of the Environment International" conferences.
It is necessary for the school to enrich the regular language and CLIL lessons with continuously improved teachers' language skills and with methodological knowledge in the field of teaching languages and CLIL. Due to the fact that we provide our students with a tight international and intercultural network (Erasmus+ projects, eTwinning projects, Caretakers of the Environment International Conference) the BG/BRG Judenburg seeks to offer further high quality training for teachers and AEs on an international and inter-cultural level.
Main Objectives:
The main objective of this project is to maintain sustainability for a previous Erasmus+ KA1 project in which language teachers from the BG/BRG Judenburg were the first time involved in a KA1 project in order to get a professional training. As the first KA1 project was highly successful, not only the principle and administration but also other teachers especially CLIL teachers showed their interest in continuing language and CLIL courses on a European level.
The main objective of language and CLIL courses is that teachers and AEs should get high quality input by native speakers and also experts in the field of CLIL which can be used and integrated later on in lower and higher classes of the BG/BRG Judenburg. The planned training courses should also provide current and future CLIL teachers with professional CLIL and professional language training to boost their self-confidence and motivation of using English on a daily basis and integrating CLIL in
their classes.
The second main objective is to spread the European concept of the BG/BRG Judenburg also among teachers. Our school wants to install a team of qualified teachers and AEs, that knows the concept of successful European schools, standardized project management processes and methodological and didactic strategies. The school strategy aims to bear comparison with international standards which can only be reached with internationally gained experiences and trainings.
As a first step, the BG/BRG Judenburg has carried out several Comenius/Erasmus+ projects with students and one Erasmus+ KA1 project with teachers. Now, the administration aims to imply more teachers and AEs in European projects and trainings. With the participation in high quality trainings on an international level, teachers and AEs do not only strengthen their professional qualifications but also their social, cultural, linguistic and communicative skills. With the acquisition of all these skills and abilities, teachers can identify students' needs much better and as a result trained teachers can support students in a more professional way.
Due to the training teachers and AEs will be much more motivated to spread the European idea at their work and they will create a pro-European atmosphere. All these attitudes can be transferred among other teachers and into the class and also passed on to students, which will as a next step motivate students to participate in eTwinning or Erasmus+ projects, carried out by the BG/BRG Judenburg.
Results and Outcomes:
Participating teachers will profit from the training on several levels:
1.) Due to the participation in the language and CLIL methodological course the administration of the school hopes that teachers improve their methodological/didactic competences a lot, which also leads to an enhancement of the personal methodological repertoire and a reflexion on the personal pedagogical acting. The training leads participants into a didactic discourse with colleagues and to discuss approaches to learning/teaching scenarios in CLIL. Within these trainings, teachers learn according to the European sense, from their European colleagues.
2.) Our experience from previous EU+ projects shows that stays/trainings abroad are always combined with intercultural learning. Only if teachers have intercultural skills they are able to act as a role model for students and they integrate their intercultural experiences/skills in the schools’ activities. Teachers who have a wide range of intercultural understanding lead their students to reflect on stereotypes, norms and social values as well as the understanding of Europe as a community.
3.) Teachers and AEs will also improve their language and CLIL skills. Due to the project, teachers and AEs refresh their linguistic fluency, their vocabulary and actual linguistic tendencies, which they will apply in their daily teaching routine.
4.) In this project Austrian teachers meet teachers from other European countries, which leads to an expansion of the intern. network the BRG Judenburg has developed during the last decade. Only if the school has a good international network, future European and international projects can be carried out successfully.
In relation to the participants (main target group) we expect the following results:
- new inspirations/motivation for their daily work with CLIL and passing on acquired knowledge and experiences to the staff
- broadening the horizon and the perspective on Europe, an improvement of language and CLIL skills, and strengthening the will to get in contact with European and international schools, institutions and partners and to launch future projects and attend professional training courses in English
- increase of professionalism in the approach to new methodological and didactic CLIL teaching forms
- acquisition of innovative learning strategies
- enhancement of professional use of modern media and IT-devices in class
- that participants get in touch with new curriculum and A-level relevant topics and methodologies and that they find a modern approach to up to date English topics which can be easily introduced in class In relation to the involved institutions we expect the following results:
- to motivate participants to use modern methods and learning CLIL strategies in class
- to provide participants with curriculum relevant topics and learning strategies
- to provide well-structured and well organized classes with a professional approach to teaching methods and strategies
