Pharmacology Lecture
Dates of Activities: 1/11/2022 and 1/12/2022
Setting: Virtual through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy Blackboard Collaborate
Length: 2 hours of instruction with approximately 10 hours of preparation
Description of Activity: I was able to teach two hours in the second-year pharmacology course through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy. The lesson topic was anticoagulation. It focused on the process of coagulation and anticoagulation as well as the medications that affect the clotting cascade. I also developed the testing material that would be used to assess the students' knowledge.
Experience of Learners: Second-year pharmacy students
Comfort level: There were several aspects of this activity that made me reach out of my comfort zone. I have never developed test items for a pharmacy course, so this was a newer experience for me. I had also never taught in front of so many pharmacy students. Previously my pharmacy school teaching was geared towards small groups or individuals.
Method of Teaching/Assessment: This was developed a lecture-style lesson where I was able to further utilize PollEverywhere to encourage classroom participation. The involvement of the class was very encouraging and validated my current practices of using testing as a means of teaching and encouraging classroom engagement.
Goals addressed:
Goal 1: Promote learner involvement through interactive learning activities.
Goal 3: Develop lesson plans that are effective for the lecture style, topic, and learners.
Reflection: This process taught me how much is involved with developing a lecture. There were several deadlines that I needed to meet to have this lecture prepared and up to the standards necessary for teaching. I missed one of the deadlines for this activity because I ran out of time while preparing the information. Through speaking with one of my mentors, I was able to develop strategies for meeting deadlines for large, longitudinal projects. The biggest flaw that occurred during this activity was that I was so overwhelmed by the number of responsibilities necessary to complete the lesson and examination that I forgot to ask for written evaluations of my lessons. I did, however, meet with my teaching mentor who was able to sit in on the lessons and give me formative feedback that I have used to change my teaching style.
