Welcome to my online teaching portfolio! I hope this collection of information will help tell the story of my teaching journey. This portfolio will follow both years of my pharmacy residency training and my involvement in the University of Arkansas for Medical Science (UAMS) College of Pharmacy Teaching Certificate Program. My desire to teach is rooted in how I have best grown as a learner. While studying for examinations during undergraduate and pharmacy coursework, I enjoyed leading pseudo-review sessions with friends. I discovered these review sessions helped me retain important information, and I thoroughly enjoyed teaching others. The part of teaching I continue to appreciate most is when learners have an epiphany, that “a-ha!” moment, when learning clicks for them. While completing this program, I had the opportunity to explore this interest with numerous activities you will find highlighted in my teaching activities section such as in-class teaching, committee involvement, rotation preceptorship, and much more.
My involvement in the Teaching Certificate Program through UAMS College of Pharmacy has helped me advance both my short-term and long-term career goals. These goals encompass both pharmacy practice and education. During my first year of the Teaching Certificate Program, short-term goals included completing both a PGY-1 and PGY-2 residency, completing a Master of Education degree, and obtaining a pharmacy position that would allow me to find the appropriate mix of teaching and clinical practice. I am thankful that I have been able to make great progress toward these goals. I graduated from my PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency and will be completing my PGY-2 pediatric pharmacy residency in June. I have enrolled in a Master of Education degree program focusing on health profession education. Finally, I have accepted a position as the Pharmacy Clinical Educator at Arkansas Children's Hospital. Because of my progress toward these short-term goals, I have been able to add some additional goals which include becoming a board-certified pediatric pharmacy specialist, completing my Master of Education program, and strengthening the onboarding and ongoing competency programs at Arkansas Children's Hospital. In the long run, my goals include becoming more involved with a college of pharmacy curriculum both as an assistant clinical professor and community member of academic committees. I would also hope to continue to strengthen my ability to teach and become more involved in local, state, regional, and national organizations. Finally, I want to grow into a leader and take on more executive-level positions in the future whether that is clinical as a pharmacy manager focusing on clinical education or as a department chair or dean at a college of pharmacy.
In each step of my education, I have purposely sought opportunities to develop into a successful educator. The Teaching Certificate Program successfully added several additional opportunities that I would not have been able to experience without involvement in the program. I plan to utilize the knowledge, experience, and mentors that I gained throughout this process to build the foundation for a successful academic career. This year I have grown confident in my teaching and developed the ability to assess my learners and adapt my teaching to benefit them the most. Thank you for visiting my portfolio. I hope the story that it tells is as fun to read as it was to experience. Please contact me if you have any questions.
