Dates of Activities: 3/3/2021
Setting: Arkansas Children's Hospital Pharmacy Conference Room
Length: 1 hour
Description of Activity: I participated in one large group teaching activity when I presented my grand rounds presentation to the Arkansas Children's Hospital pharmacy staff. This grand rounds presentation centered around a practice change where the pharmacy was going to start using new emergency drug boxes. Along with this presentation, I created a spreadsheet that auto-populated with random medications, patient weights, and indications for emergency participation. This presentation was on March 3rd, 2021, and was an hour long. I spent about 2 weeks preparing for the presentation including the peer-review process.
Experience of Learners: Pharmacists
Comfort level: This experience is honestly where I felt the least confidence in my abilities to present. I believe it had to deal with the nerves of presenting to my peers and bosses. I think the nerves made this presentation much more important to me and made it more worthwhile when it was successful.
Method of Teaching/Assessment: This was a lecture-style presentation utilizing a PowerPoint with objectives and questions to verify understanding. The spreadsheet I created presented four truly random scenarios and one preselected scenario meant to test a major medication change in the drug boxes. In order to assess understanding of the spreadsheet, pharmacists were required to submit a signed document saying they utilized the training device.
Goals addressed:
Goal 1: Develop clear lecture objectives to effectively guide learners through the learning experience.
Goal 2: Provide a variety of objective and quality written and verbal feedback to promote learner growth.
Goal 3: Implement adaptive teaching methods to promote knowledge retention and meet individual learning needs.
Reflection: This experience was fun to produce because it was over a topic that I thoroughly enjoy, emergency participation. It was incredibly nerve-wracking because I wanted to do really well on it, and as stated earlier, I did not feel the most confident in my abilities to impress my peers and bosses. I spent a lot of time thinking of measurable objectives that were important for the current state of the pharmacy. I wanted the lecture to address the issues that pharmacy was currently facing and point out areas for growth and learning. During the presentation, I asked both scripted and non-scripted questions to assess how the presentation was flowing and the level of understanding. This was presented virtually, so a majority of the answers were given utilizing a chat function, but it appeared that the learners were following along and retaining appropriately. I was able to receive feedback both from a mentor and a Teaching Certificate Program peer during this session. I utilized the feedback from both learners as well as the rest of the audience to determine areas for growth. I believe that following this presentation, I could have provided more in-depth objectives to try to challenge the audience a little bit more than I did because of their already high baseline level of knowledge. The spreadsheet was fun to make because I wanted to make a unique learning tool that many pharmacists had not seen before. I still receive comments noting how helpful it is and how many of them were unaware that spreadsheets were capable of doing what it does.
