• Toilet paper

  • If you see a wastebasket next to the toilet, that's usually a sign that toilet paper should be discarded there rather than flushed. When in doubt, ask your host or look for posted instructions.

  • In many parts of Brazil, especially in older buildings and smaller towns, plumbing and sewer systems were not designed to handle large amounts of toilet paper. To prevent clogged pipes and sewer backups, toilet paper is often placed in a wastebasket beside the toilet instead of being flushed.
