Initial Baseline Mold & Indoor Air Quality Assessments for Barnstable Public Schools
From February 26, 2025, to March 28, 2025, EnviroMed Services, Inc. conducted Initial Baseline Mold & Indoor Air Quality Assessments at all nine (9) Barnstable Public Schools.
Assessment Protocol
The protocol for these assessments included:
Establishing an Outdoor Baseline for all parameters, including airborne mold counts.
Comprehensive Walkthrough & Visual Inspection of every room in each school building.
Real-Time Indoor Air Quality Measurements for:
Temperature
Relative Humidity
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
Formaldehyde
Particulate Matter (Dust)
Mold Sampling using two collection methods:
Air Sampling – Using spore trap cassettes to measure airborne mold in each space.
Surface Sampling (Tape Lifts) – Collecting samples directly from surfaces showing visible mold growth.
Standards & Guidelines referenced:
OSHA – Occupational Safety and Health Administration
EPA – Environmental Protection Agency
ASHRAE – American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers
LEED – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
All mold samples were analyzed by a nationally accredited laboratory to determine mold species and concentrations. Air sample results were compared to outdoor baseline levels.

Cleaning & Remediation Process
Small Areas of Surface Mold (<10 sq. ft.) – Cleaned and disinfected by trained Barnstable Public Schools staff using approved cleaning procedures.
Larger Areas of Surface Mold (>10 sq. ft.) or Toxigenic Mold – Professionally cleaned and disinfected by a licensed mold remediation contractor.
Post-Remediation Clearance Testing – Conducted by EnviroMed Services after all cleaning to verify that mold was successfully removed and surfaces were safe.
Zero-Tolerance Policy - EnviroMed recommends a zero-tolerance policy to mold. Under this policy, a surface is considered fully cleaned only when laboratory results confirm no mold is present.
