At Barnstable Public Schools, your health, safety, and comfort are our first priority. We are committed to ensuring that every classroom and workspace is a healthy environment where you can teach, learn, and work without distraction or concern.
We want you to trust that when a concern is raised, our Facilities Team will follow through — investigating the issue and making sure it is addressed properly.
That being said, before you submit a work order for a mold or IAQ concern, there are a few things to consider. By following these steps first, we can make sure every work order is focused on the issues that truly require Facilities’ attention and resources.
Before you Submit a Work Order, Here are Things to Consider:
Some concerns can be addressed right in the classroom or workspace without the need for a formal work order. Please check for and correct the following preventive measures first:
Remove dust/allergen collectors – Avoid heavy drapes, plush rugs, and upholstered furniture, or replace them with low‑pile, washable options.
Clear vents and thermostats – Keep the top and front of univents, air supply/return vents, and thermostats unobstructed.
Reduce clutter – Store items in sealed containers, off the floor, and away from walls to allow for proper cleaning and airflow.
Maintain classroom equipment – Make sure portable air purifiers and dehumidifiers have clean filters and are placed in central, unobstructed locations.
Address small cleanable issues – Wipe up minor stains, dust, or spills using school‑approved cleaning products.
If You’ve Addressed What You Can , Here's How to Submit a Work Order
If you have taken all reasonable preventive steps and the concern remains, submit a FlowPath work order right away if you notice:
Leaks or Moisture – Active leaks, wet flooring/carpets, or new/spreading water stains.
Visible or Suspect Mold – New or expanding discoloration or texture changes, recurring growth in the same area.
Persistent or Unusual Odors – Musty/moldy smells that persist after cleaning, or chemical/exhaust odors indoors.
IAQ‑Related Health Concerns – Multiple occupants reporting symptoms (e.g., coughing, headaches, eye irritation) that appear linked to the space.
Beyond Classroom Cleaning Capacity – Visible mold in inaccessible areas, and/or moisture problems in spaces you cannot reach.
Steps for Submitting a Work Order
Log into FlowPath and create a new work order.
Include details – building name, room number, and specific location(s) affected.
Describe the issue clearly – note if it is new or recurring, and include any history you know.
Attach photos and/or videos if possible to help Facilities assess the situation faster.
For urgent concerns (active leaks, large visible mold, strong odors), call the Facilities Department directly in addition to submitting the work order in FlowPath.
Working Together to Keep Barnstable Healthy
Prevention is most effective when it becomes part of our everyday routine.
By taking a few simple steps, each of us can help reduce the risk of IAQ or mold concerns before they start — keeping our schools safe, comfortable, and welcoming for everyone.
Here are a few ways you can help:
Keep surfaces clear and accessible so custodial staff can clean thoroughly.
Store items in sealed non-porous containers (e.g. plastic), off the floor, and away from vents to maintain airflow and protect materials from dust or moisture.
Report leaks or moisture promptly so they can be addressed before becoming bigger issues.
Limit fabrics and excess clutter that can collect dust, allergens, or moisture.
Do quick visual checks for any new stains, unusual odors, or signs of moisture.
Together, we can ensure Barnstable schools remain healthy, safe, and comfortable learning environments.
