Player Name: Manda
Full Name: Seth River Frost
Nicknames and Pseudonyms: nothing specific, though he was once Petty Officer Second Class Frost when he was part of the Coalition Defense Force
Age: 28
Birth Date: March 21, 2285
Blood Type: B+
Role on Ship: Engineer
Homeworld: Paradise
Significant Relations and Affiliations: CJ Shirley Frost (best bro, husband, soul mate) Laelia-Belle Frost (daughter, alive) Annabelle Frost (mom, alive) Charlie Bell (sort of father figure, deceased) Rose Aubert (ex-wife) The Crew of the Sila. He also has numerous ex-lovers.
Bonds, Obligations, Debts, and Warrants: On parole until April 2314. Probably has some people in his past who wouldn't mind hurting him. There are planets and space stations that he maybe shouldn’t ever go back to but it certainly wouldn’t stop him. He has a staggering amount of debt.
Appearance: Seth's hair is chestnut brown and worn long to just below his shoulders. When left to its own devices it tends to fall in loose curls, but more often than not he ties it back out of his face. He wears a short beard on a handsome face that is absolutely covered in freckles and his eyes are honey brown. Seth's skin is lightly tanned despite his lack of sun exposure in the last few years and dotted with freckles and moles all over. His build is naturally lean but between his time in the military and then in prison, he's built up a healthy musculature. He's a rather average 5'10".
Seth has a bunch of random tattoos on his body, most of them surprisingly dainty, like the rose on the outside of his wrist/forearm. He has the Coalition Defense Force insignia tattooed on his right ass cheek and a tattoo on the side of his neck that reads KISS HERE and partially covers a set of puncture scars from a vampire bite. Along with those tattoos are some random piercings - his nose, tragus, forward helix, a few others in each ear. His crooked teeth add some imperfect charm to his smile.
He also has a ton of scars from his daredevil nature, like the time he got harpooned through the calf. One of his most eye-catching is a six inch surgical scar around his right side, arcing downward toward his hip bone which a medically knowledgeable mind would recognize as a kidney removal scar. Seth still has both of his kidneys. He also has another set of vampire scars on the back of his shoulder.
Seth was born with gills located high up on his ribs, starting about five inches below his armpits and angling down under his pectorals. They resemble the gills of a shark and allow him to breathe underwater indefinitely. One has a scarred notch where he pierced it with a safety pin when he was a teenager. Naturally, it got ripped out within a day.
Seth always looks a bit disheveled, like he just rolled out of bed and this is often the case. He just pulls on whatever he can find that smells halfway clean and usually wears his clothes into the ground, leaving them ripped or written on and typically a bit mismatched. That is, of course, when he bothers with clothes at all because he can often be found in various stages of undress when he can get away with it. He often loses clothes as well, a side effect of taking them off in the strangest places and then forgetting about them, and always keeps a small multitool in his pocket.
He wears a good amount of jewelry in the form of rings, bracelets, and necklaces, but there are three items he wears every day: a chain necklace clasped at the front with a small lock, a silver and black shark ring on his right hand, and a wedding band inlaid with koa wood on his left.
Personality: Seth can be . . . a lot. In fact, many people prefer him in small doses. He's the type to say yes to every bad idea that crosses his - or anyone else's - mind. If you need something stupid, reckless, or potentially suicidal done, he's your guy!
Seth was diagnosed with ADHD and dysgraphia as a child, which manifests as impulsivity, distractibility, forgetfulness, bouts of hyperfocus, poor spelling and an inability to organize and then relay his thoughts. And while he hasn't been formally diagnosed with autism, anyone familiar with the signs would wonder how so many professionals missed it.
He can be a bit high-strung, despite his recreational pot use, and while he is very capable of going with the flow, Seth does much better when he has a routine. His teasing leans more toward good-natured than malicious, and he's quick to laugh and very willing to be the butt of a joke. That said, he's flighty and can sometimes hurt people's feelings without intending to when he says things without thinking or disappears mid-conversation to chase a whim. While he doesn't have many true friends, Seth is incredibly loyal to those he has even if he has a tendency to float in and out of their lives. If a friend needs him, he'll literally cross the galaxy to be there for them.
A bit of a goofball at times, Seth is surprisingly good with both children and animals. Interacting with them, anyway; the responsibility of the day to day care tends to escape him.
Seth also has a streak of vanity that comes from a lifetime of being told that he's attractive and being able to use his looks to his advantage. He's very confident when it comes to his appearance, physical or engineering skills, but less so when it comes to traditionally 'smart' pursuits or some social interactions. He's very bad at reading between the lines and tends to take things at face value; he does much better when someone trusted is around for him to take his cues from.
Seth leads a feast or famine lifestyle. He's incredibly irresponsible with his money, especially considering his personal income is largely inconsistent, and a lot of it comes from gambling. When he has money to spare, he either spends it on things he really doesn't need or helps out those who need it. If the mood strikes, he'll donate to charities, pay someone's rent, or just buy everyone a round of drinks. When the money runs out though, which doesn't take very long, Seth finds himself with barely two nickels to rub together and then it's 'hey, spot me some creds? You know I'm good for it.' (He's not.)
Seth's gambling problem dogs him but it's hardly his only vice. When he drinks, he drinks to get drunk. He also has a sordid history with drugs and drug abuse and recently admitted to himself that he's an addict - if one in recovery. Until he and CJ became monogamous, he was also known for taking more risks with his sex life than he should. He's pansexual and will try anything once, which has resulted in some interesting nights and entertaining stories - not all of them good.
While Seth is undoubtedly a spaceshot, he's borderline brilliant when it comes to anything electrical or mechanical. While his brain may struggle to focus on the mundane, it positively comes alive when he has to puzzle his way around complex machines. It's a skill that surprises those who don't know him well and could have been his ticket to a lucrative career had he ever bothered to do something with it.
Strengths, Talents, Abilities: Seth's most marketable skills and, ironically, the ones he used the least until recently, are his engineering abilities. He's a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to anything with wires, circuits, knobs, or switches and, as of recently, is a certified hydraulic technician. He could probably service a droid if he had to but doesn't actually have any experience working on them. Always has something he's tinkering on, with pieces strewn about his living/working space, but often left unfinished.
He was infantry so he does have tactical knowledge and the ability to handle weapons. He's a capable scrapper but is rarely the one to throw the first punch; you can't do as many dumb things as Seth has and not know how to defend yourself. If he has to fight, then he’ll fight dirty. He's not, at heart, a cruel person but he's not to be underestimated if he's backed into a corner; he'll do just about whatever he has to in order to survive.
Seth is simultaneously both lucky and unlucky. If things can go wrong, they usually will, but somehow the end result - by some miracle - is him not ending up dead. He has a natural affinity for water, fresh or salt, and is a strong swimmer, skilled surfer and skateboarder, etc. Not that any of these things are very useful in space. He's generally athletic and these pursuits tend to come easily.
Weaknesses and Fears: Seth is a social creature and really doesn't like being alone. His neurodivergence is a significant hindrance and his Type-II Alexithymia means that he struggles with identifying, verbalizing, and analyzing his emotions. He also has sensory issues that get worse depending on his level of upset, anxiety, or stimulation, which directly ties into his penchant for taking off his clothes.
His past is littered with bad choices and occasionally they come back to haunt him. He has a ton of heavy trauma that he struggles with and that struggle is often ugly. He holds a hell of a grudge.
Seth has to drink a lot of water since he dehydrates very easily, leaving him with a headache and dizziness. He's a very picky eater and has a delicate belly. He prefers baths to showers when he has the option and suffers through nasty hangovers. He's well suited to balmy, tropical weather, not so much excessively arid or cold climates. He has a very hard time keeping money in his pockets and can't seem to pass up a chance to gamble. He's a terrible influence and a serial enabler.
History: Seth was born on Paradise, the only child of Annabelle Frost, local 'holistic healer', crystal aficionado, and free spirit who sells her services to the local rich folk. Flighty and effervescent, it wasn't so much that Annabelle subscribed to a specific parenting style as it was that she never really put any thought into it. She loved Seth with all of her heart, was emotionally supportive if not the most present parent, busy floating her way through life seemingly without much deep rumination.
Seth's first friend was CJ, a boy from down the island who was maybe just as lonely for a friend as Seth was. The two quickly became inseparable, each other's confidants and staunchest defendants, in a friendship that grew right along with every inch of height they gained.
School was a challenge from the beginning, with being close to CJ Seth's only real motivation for being there. It became evident early on that the structure and expectations were a lot for him and meetings with Annabelle became a regular occurrence, even if they did little to help. Annabelle was sure that Seth would figure it out; he was just a dreamer with his head under the waves and he'd be fine.
And, for the most part, he was. Seth pursued the things that interested him, ran wild through the 'slums' of Paradise, made a few more friends, and just sort of paved his own way. His neighbors picked up his mother's slack, feeding him dinner when she wasn't home to do so, patching up scraped knees, or making sure he headed off to school in the morning.
Seth spent a lot of time with Charlie Bell, engineer and veteran of the Civil War, who ran a repair business out of his home down-island. He taught Seth everything he knew and was impressed with how well the boy did. He has an engineer's brain, Charlie had told Annabelle, stressing that she should push Seth to pursue it. She left it in her son's hands instead and, well...focus and direction were things Seth was never really good at. And they seemed wholly unimportant to a growing boy who had so many better things to worry about than the future.
The eventual ADHD diagnosis wasn't even much of a help. Sure, it explained a whole lot, and in theory should have helped the school to manage him, but Paradise public schools weren't exactly well funded and the attention paid to him was largely dependent on his current teacher and how much they cared.
Still, he managed to make it from one year to the next, mostly driven by his desire to be promoted alongside CJ and their other friends and with plenty of panicked, last minute help from the small group of them.
Funny, friendly, cute, and daring, Seth was popular among his peers - superficially, at least. They wanted him at the parties right up until overstimulation hit and his still-undiagnosed autism had him spinning out of control, his *quirks* coming to the surface, and that boisterous laughter taking on an edge of hysteria. Then it was CJ they called to talk him off the proverbial ledge - and sometimes literal, because he did have a tendency to climb.
Not that CJ was ever really far. By day the two were nearly always together and spent their time cliff diving, spelunking through underwater caves, surfing, and at night they'd often lay on the docks and watch the stars, imagining seeing in person all of those faraway planets that they learned about in school. Sure, their home was a literal paradise but they were born poor, which meant a future of cleaning toilets and serving rich people their meals.
As is so often the case, boredom led to trouble, especially in their teenage years. There were plenty of fat wallets just waiting to be emptied by a lighthearted con, plenty of socialite housewives who needed a cute pool boy to ogle, and plenty of bored sons and daughters eager to spice up their evenings by slumming with the locals. CJ kept them all well-supplied with pot and their dares became ever more extreme and dangerous. And, of course, the local law enforcement knew exactly who they were.
So when they'd both turned eighteen, they did the one thing that would guarantee them a ticket off Paradise: they joined the military.
Boot camp was . . . fine. Yeah, they shaved Seth's hair off and made him exercise in ways that rarely involved swimming and never surfing. They were given a bedtime and had to get up before the sun rose, but CJ was there too so at least Seth didn't have to suffer alone. Plus, the routine was helpful with managing his ADHD. And they did learn some cool stuff, but Seth largely approached his budding military career with the same effort that he'd given his schooling, which was to say, very little.
It was mostly because of this that Seth was lumped in with the other grunts who had no real skills to offer aside from dying for the Coalition and when boot camp was done, he was shipped off to one side of the galaxy, and CJ to the other.
The first couple years were tolerable, though Seth made no real effort to avoid trouble. He mostly just did what he wanted, sometimes getting caught, sometimes not. While there, his engineering skills finally came to light and he made himself a smidge more useful by doing repairs and upkeep on the ships, weapons, and vehicles.
His last year proved utterly miserable when he was assigned to the Earth patrols. There was never anything more boring, he'd convinced himself, and the only cool thing he did was learn how to spacewalk. It was too little, too late though. What few fucks he had to give had all been used up and Seth began 'acting out' in ways he hadn’t since boot camp; he was never on time, couldn't follow orders, and outright insubordinate at times. His superiors continued to come up with one unique punishment after the next, hoping that one would snap him back into shape, but nothing seemed to work.
Soon, he was shipped back to Praxas, where he began putting the pieces together and realized that CJ had gotten out. Seth upped his game, 'fraternizing' with the female soldiers, drinking like a fish, and while it wouldn't have taken much at that point for Seth to earn his dishonorable discharge, he made sure to go out with a bang.
And then, finally, he and CJ were free to do whatever the hell they wanted. For the next few years, the two just hopped from one planet or space station to the next, raising hell and then moving on when things got too hot. They made terrible choices, were broke and rich in equal measure, and Seth had his kidney stolen and then, well, *put back*. He even married the thief afterwards, and though their relationship was tumultuous and they ended up separated, they only recently bothered to divorce. He picked up odd jobs here and there, some of which were actually legitimate ways to make a steady paycheck - like when he worked as a shipbuilder on Warden - and others that brought in a lot of cash really quickly but fizzled out just as fast - like his short-lived career as a model and even shorter stint as a porn star.
Getting into as much hot water as he and CJ did meant frequent brushes with the law and while the two spent plenty of time in lock-up, neither ended up in prison until the brilliant idea to make a shit load of money by sneaking onto the local military base to - ahem! - borrow some new energy tech. Things went tits up though when they decided to, instead, liberate the animals being used for testing and soon the two were running for their lives - or, at least, their freedom. While CJ made it to safety, Seth didn't.
Seth ended up sentenced to three years in Joyville Correctional Center on Cantra for attempted theft of government property, breaking and entering, trespassing, and ecoterrorism, but would be eligible for parole in two if he behaved himself.
And he did, for the most part. Prison wasn't as bad as Seth had been expecting - or at least that’s what he tells everyone, the reality was much different - and after the first month or so, he muddled through by making the right friends and minding his business. He was still able to talk to his mom, and though she never had the money to visit him, she was forever sending him food and crystals that she swore would protect him. Of course, he wasn't actually allowed any of these things, but he didn't have the heart to tell her. He looked forward to calls and visits from CJ but after a while those began to peter out and Seth later learned that his best friend had gone and replaced him with a damn robot.
Still, when it came time for parole, it was CJ who was there to greet him and the two went on a bender in celebration. Sobering up meant embarking on the next leg of he and CJ's grand tour around the universe, but this time was different. Seth was different, CJ was different, and did they even know each other at all anymore? A kiss - their second ever - had them thinking that maybe they didn't.
But that kiss opened the floodgates, allowing them both to act on nearly a lifetime's worth of buried, unspoken feelings. Things were tumultuous at first, bleeding out through the crew they'd begun to think of as family, and just when things couldn't get worse, they did. Rock bottom meant the looming threat of prison nearly becoming a reality again, an overdose, two dead bodies and a baby that Seth both didn't know about and didn't want.
There was only one place to go from the bottom though and with the crew and CJ there to help, Seth began climbing his way back up. A new ship helped, won in a poker game and registered Pōmaika'i a Sila, as did leaving Laelia-Belle on Paradise with Seth and CJ's moms. Though both of them were listed as her parents on her new birth certificate, neither he nor CJ were ready for that level of responsibility. Plus, it was a safe place for her, considering who Cayden Smock's family was.
The galaxy awaited and, this time, it wasn't just the two of them; they had new friends now, people who were quickly becoming family and not just a crew. Seth and CJ even found some time to get married in a small beach ceremony on Paradise.
Anything Else: Has had many broken bones and hospital stays - once even to have mushed up peas flushed out of his gills after a childhood experiment with CJ (678 is how many he can fit in them, btw). While it never bothered him before prison, he now shies away from anyone touching his gills.
He's notoriously messy, something not even military service could train out of him, and leaves clothes, dishes, machine parts, etc, everywhere. He's terrible about cleaning but will occasionally get hit with a burst of motivation where he has to clean all the things. This is super rare though and usually a sign that he’s stressed or in some state of emotional upheaval.
Seth was raised pescatarian and will often choose vegetarian or vegan options when he has the choice. He misses good Paradise seafood.
Seth's a momma's boy and he video chats with her as often as he can and tells her almost everything. These tend to be very animated conversations that jump back and forth between Paradisian Basic, a pidgin form of Common, and the sign language that native Paradisians developed over the generations to communicate under water.
When Seth was in the military, Charlie Bell passed away, leaving his business, all of his possessions, and his property to Seth. He hasn't actually done anything with the property or the business aside from paying taxes once in a while though.
Loves when he gets to spacewalk because it reminds him of being in the water and he really just fucking loves space.
Model: Jerome Mathew
What is your character's favorite color?
Orange!
Does your character prefer the book or the movie?
The only 'books' Seth reads are manuals, but he sucks to watch movies with because he either fidgets non stop or falls asleep. If you can keep his hands busy then he'll manage to get through the entire thing.
What is your character's typical morning routine? Do they stick to it or does it vary?
Up early, wake n' bake, run ship diagnostics while he works out, shower, breakfast, fix anything that needs fixing. If nothing needs fixing, he'd focus on general maintenance, or just fuck off.
What is your character's Zodiac sign? Does it suit them?
Seth is an Aries, which he fits pretty damn well - passionate, confident in most ways, optimistic and honest. He's also impatient and moody at times, and absolutely hates 'sitting still'. He's right on the cusp though and has some Pisces traits as well - generous, willing to help others, the tendency to be a martyr.
What is your character's favorite food?
Fruit! He also loves Paradise food in general.
Does your character have any hidden talents or skills?
He does! He's really good at doing hair, especially natural black hair. (He's been doing CJ's hair since they were kids). He can braid really well, do cornrows, box braids, twist outs, etc. He's great with a set of clippers too. He can knit and juggle, and doesn't have a bad singing voice. Can surf and skateboard. Is decent with a can of spray paint - just don't ask him to write words because they'll absolutely be spelled wrong.
What TV/movie/literary character, etc is your character most like? Alternately, what is your character's trope?
He's a bit Andy Dwyer, a bit generic beach bum/surfer dude/burnout. Probably some others.
What is your character's relationship with their parents? What made it that way?
Seth's relationship with his mom is pretty fucking phenomenal. She's flighty enough to make Seth seem focused, which definitely influenced her parenting. She was very inconsistent, didn't put much stock in discipline and believed that a child needed full freedom in order to become the person they were meant to be. She was excellent at being supportive, understanding, and non judgmental though, which lead to Seth being able to tell her pretty much everything and anything.
Does your character have any siblings? If so, do they get along? If not, do they wish they had siblings?
Seth does technically have a few half siblings that he shares a father with but he doesn't know that they exist because he doesn't even know who his dad is. He's never wished for siblings though; CJ was basically a brother.
Does your character have any extended family they're close with?
Nope! His grandfather was estranged from Annabelle and died when Seth was young. He was close to a neighbor, Charlie, who died about 6 or 7 years ago, and there are some people back on Paradise that he's rather close to. He gets along well with CJ's aunt, Nalani.
Favorite family member and why?
His mum! Because she's fucking aces.
Least favorite family member and why?
Do CJ's parents count? Because he and CJ's dad do not get along and it's always a toss up each time as to whether he and CJ's mum will...
How does your character feel about or deal with family gatherings?
Because he and Annabelle didn't have any family on the island, they got really close with their neighbors so they're the people who would be at 'family' gatherings. Seth loves when everyone gets together though, since it's basically just a big beach party.
What are your character's feelings about their childhood?
For the most part, Seth loved his childhood and the parts that weren't so great mostly had to do with people outside of his family. Because of his ADHD, school was a constant struggle, and he had a lot of trouble connecting with other kids on more than a surface level. While he had plenty of superficial friends, he only really had three close friends - CJ, Darius, and Mariah. His impulsive nature led to getting into a lot of trouble and opinions of him varied widely from one person to the next. Same with Annabelle.
How does your character feel about *having* a family someday?
Seth would love kids someday but he's not even close to being ready for that level of responsibility and is, quite frankly, terrified of the idea of it. Eventually, he'll be ready to settle back down on Paradise with a steady job and a houseboat to live his best burn out hippie beach bum life, but who knows when that will actually be.
What kind of parent would they be? Do they think they would make a good one?
Seth would probably be a lot like Annabelle, let's be honest. He'd be all about letting his kids make their mistakes, experiment, become whoever they're meant to be, etc. He'd for sure be the 'fun dad', teaching them to swim, surf, skateboard, and they'd probably always have messy hair and dirty faces and skinned knees. A bunch of little hippie freckled beach kids gallivanting around Paradise and kicking up all sorts of trouble.
What did your character want to be when they grew up? Why? Did they attain that goal, or why did they give it up?
Seth never had a solid plan for his future. What he wanted to be would change with every fleeting interest but the common theme was that he wanted to be wherever CJ was. If that meant staying on Paradise, then he was fine with that, and if it meant joining the CDF then he'd make that work too.
After the CDF, when he got into modeling and then porn, Seth was sure he would famous and make a bunch of money but that didn't work out either.
For a while, between the ages of 7 and 9, he really wanted to be a shark.
Is your character territorial or prone to sharing? Why? Are there some things they are more territorial about than others?
It depends. He's very open and willing to share when it comes to material things, food, surface thoughts, and in the past, his body. That said, Seth guards his deep emotions intensely, and a lot of that comes from his own struggles with understanding and processing those emotions.
He's definitely territorial when it comes to his relationship with CJ and, specifically, the changes their relationship has gone through in the last few years. He's clinging to it and there's still a part of him that thinks it's all going to implode one day.
Once someone gets past his initial standoffishness and Seth decides that he likes them, he'll protect his friends from outsiders with everything he has.
What's your character's desert island pick? i.e. if stranded on a desert island, what would they choose to have with them?
*sigh* CJ.
What would they ramble endlessly about while high?
Whatever bug is buzzing about his head. It could be deep engineering rambles or silly stoned thoughts that he decides to share with the class, or anything and everything in between. He's also just as likely to end up in hyperfocus mode and not talk to anyone because he's Busy.
Any childhood regrets? Something that haunts them to this day, or that they forgot about long ago but comes up every now and then?
There's a whole list of things he'd do differently if he had the chance - mostly small choices that led to big consequences.
Now that he's gotten older, Seth really regrets the way he treated his on-again off-again teenage-hood girlfriend, Mariah. While he didn't purposely intend to jerk her around, he does now see that it was incredibly unfair of him to take advantage of her the way he did.
He also regrets deleting the video of him and CJ on the beach during their 18th birthday party. (iykyk)
How do they respond in anger? Do they throw things? Go deadly silent? Slam doors, stomp around, or put an inhuman level of effort into maintaining their composure?
Hoooooboy. That very much depends.
Seth has no composure and he's not great at masking his feelings, so his responses can occasionally seem either very excessive or very understated depending on how the incident hits and what else is going on in his life. His alexithymia makes it very difficult for him to ride that wave of anger with any sort of self awareness.
He's definitely a door slammer, and has hurt himself in a fit of anger in the past, but he's not generally inclined to lash out at others even if it has happened a few times in the past.
Introvert or extrovert?
Both? Depending on the day? It's real easy for Seth to get spun up, go balls to the walls, and seem like the life of the party right up until he crashes and burns. He desperately needs the quiet days that follow.
What is their worst habit or flaw? Are they aware of it? How do they feel about it, if so? Does it affect their interactions with other people?
Because of his pretty privilege, Seth gets away with a lot when he first meets people. He has an easy time making people like him *at first* but the general consensus afterwards is that he's 'difficult'. For a lot of people, his looks and charm aren't worth the minefield you have to navigate once that shine wears off, and he has a hard time keeping friends long-term.
Seth has a ton of bad habits. He can rub people the wrong way - either intentionally or not - and is a nasty grudge holder. He has a natural inclination to buck the system and doesn't do well with rules of any sort even if he craves stability and structure. While he is aware of most of this, he has a hard time being introspective about it and doesn't know how to go about changing any of it.
What does their most recent text message say?
Probably a dick pic, let's be honest.
How do they sleep? Side or stomach? Through the night or in fits and starts? Wearing fancy PJs or nothing at all?
Always naked, if he has the choice. Always tangled up with CJ, sometimes on top of him, sometimes spooning. He usually has a hard time falling asleep, occasionally sleepwalks, talks in his sleep, and once he wakes up, he's *wide awake* even if he tends to be a bit grumpy during those first few minutes.
How do they respond to embarrassment? Do they try to hide it, or is it incredibly obvious? Do they deflect, are they good natured about it, or do they get angry?
Seth doesn't get embarrassed often but if he does, it's usually because he realized that he either missed a social cue or got the inkling that someone is low-key making fun of him/intentionally making him feel stupid. How he responds to that is very situational. If CJ is there and a part of the conversation, Seth naturally looks to him to decide how he should react. Typically, he'll pull away to try and process what happened by himself.
What is the most minor thing you can think of that would make them happy?
CJ's attention.
