The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year educational program that is recognized by many universities worldwide and offered to SHS students in ICA. It was founded in Geneva and has since spread across the world.
IBDP students complete assessments in six subjects, one from each subject group, and three core requirements. Students are evaluated using both internal and external assessments, and courses finish with an externally assessed series of examinations in May of their final year.
Internal assessments may be oral presentations, practical work, or written work. In most cases, these are initially graded by the classroom teacher, whose grades are then verified or modified by an external moderator.
Made up of the three required components, the DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.
The three core elements are:
Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
Creativity, activity, service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.
The six subject groups are:
Studies in language and literature
Language acquisition
Individuals and societies
Sciences
Mathematics
The arts
240 hours of teaching
Usually includes an additional Paper 3 (ex. Psychology, Math) or requirement (ex. Langlit HL Essay)
150 hours of teaching
If you're in a mixed HL and SL class, you might get release time!
