I am Alicia Bourdier and I am a native of St.Francisville, Louisiana. I currently live in the Walker area. I am married to a wonderful human being and outstanding musician, James Bourdier, and we have two children. Our family moved back to Lousiana in the fall of 2020, after living and teaching in Texas for 7 years. While in Texas, I taught private lessons, Kindermusik, Elementary music to grades K-5 in a public school, and our last 3 years in Texas, I was the Director of Piano Studies at Smithson Valley High School outside of San Antonio.
I have been a member of TMEA as well as other organizations for numerous years. I have a Bachelor of Music Composition from Louisiana State University with concentrations in the areas of Theory, Piano and Piano Pedagogy. I am certified in Music EC-12 (Texas), Music K-12 Instrumental (Louisiana) Music K-12 Vocal (Louisiana) , a licensed Kindermusik educator, and I have 25+ years teaching experience as well as 30+ performing experience. Music is my passion and I am the happiest when I am teaching and sharing music with my students.
I embrace and practice a holistic approach with European influences in my teaching methods, and gravitate towards the philosophies of Dalzroze and Taubman. It is my belief that the student should establish and master fundamental technical and physical concepts from the start of instruction. Priority should be given to the development of instrument fluency above all other concepts and tools.
My name is James Bourdier and I have been teaching music for 30 years. My father was a high school band director for 15 years and I practically grew up in the band hall. I started piano lessons at age 8 and joined the junior high band as a percussionist in sixth grade. In high school, I was selected for the Texas All-State Band three years. After graduating from Lamar University, I taught in the Beaumont and Fort Worth areas before settling in Houston. I then turned my focus to performing, and over the next 10 years performed with over 20 different musical groups with various styles including rock, jazz, country, and classical. I have taught private lessons, high school and junior high band, and elementary music K-5.
