Inside Volcanoes: What Happens Beneath the Surface and Why It Matters
Withington Girls’ School Science Club (Fallowfield, Manchester, UK)
February 2026
Talk summary
Volcanoes are among the most fascinating and powerful natural phenomena on Earth. But what actually happens beneath the surface before an eruption? In this talk, I will explain how magma forms and moves inside the Earth, and how these processes can trigger volcanic eruptions. We will explore why volcanoes can be dangerous for nearby communities, how scientists study and help mitigate volcanic risk, and how volcanoes provide useful resources, from fertile soils to geothermal energy. Using real examples from volcanology research, I will show how studying volcanoes helps us better understand our planet and protect people living in volcanic regions. I will finally share what it is like to work as a researcher in Earth sciences and the pathways that can lead to a career in volcanology.
