Conductor EmERITus: Paul Goodchild
Paul GoodChild
1960-2022 (march 29)
Yesterday we lost a great friend, and Australia lost one of its preeminent musicians, with the death of Paul Goodchild.
Paul was a prodigious talent, joining the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the age of 18 and remaining an active member for 42 years, ultimately being appointed Associate Principal Trumpet.
Paul’s talent was widely recognised by Australian composers, many of whom wrote pieces especially for him, including Carl Vine, Ross Edwards, Barry McKimm, David Stanhope, Matthew Hindson, and Paul Stanhope. One of Paul’s proudest achievements was premiering Alan Holley’s Dopplers Web with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
To celebrate his 40th anniversary with the Orchestra, Paul presented William Lovelock’s Trumpet Concerto, a piece composed for John Robertson, a former SSO Principal Trumpet. Paul’s commanding performance of this piece was inspirational, and a fitting tribute to a former great Australian musician.
Paul commenced his playing career as a member of Bondi Brass (formerly Waverley Bondi Beach Band), a community group of musicians formed by his father, Cliff. Paul always valued the musical grounding the brass band afforded him and would often guest with the band for community events and concerts. Paul eventually took over from Cliff as the Music Director and held that position until his diagnosis in 2019.
Paul was deeply committed to music education, both as a Music Director and as a private teacher. He was also a Board Director of the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival, founded by Cliff in 1962 and now the largest event of its kind in Australia with more than 350 ensembles and 11,000 students participating annually. The Festival was last held in a physical capacity in 2019 and Paul attended every day, assisting young musicians back stage despite being in some obvious discomfort, his diagnosis not yet having been determined.
Paul had an unquenchable love of life. He was a great raconteur, a wine connoisseur, a fantastic cook, and he loved his South Sydney Rabbitohs.
We are the poorer for his passing, but Australia is a much richer place for Paul having been with us, albeit for too short a time.
Paul is survived by his wife, Yvette, children Morley and Alana, and sister, Louise.

Conductor Emeritus: Paul Goodchild
Paul William Goodchild began his musical studies with his father Cliff Dominic Goodchild (former Principal Tuba of Sydney Symphony Orchestra) before undertaking formal lessons from Norm Harris, Lew Campbell and Ernest Llewellyn (former Concertmaster Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Dean of Canberra School of Music).

Showing remarkable talent at an early age, Paul was in his mid teens when he performed with the touring Bolshoi Ballet Orchestra as Principal Trumpet as well as being engaged to play with the touring D’Oyly Carte Opera Company (UK) and the Australian Opera. In 1979, at age eighteen, Paul was appointed as a full time member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held for 42 years.
At the invitation of leading UK conductor, Elgar Howarth, Paul moved to Europe in 1984 to further his orchestral studies. During this period he specialised in the vibrant music of the Baroque Period and received high praise for his solo and chamber music recitals. Paul returned to Australia in 1985 and rejoined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) as the Associate Principal Trumpet, a position he still holds.
Paul is a prodigious talent and is in high demand around Australia. He has performed on numerous occasions as guest Principal of the Melbourne, Adelaide, Queensland and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras and has toured extensively with the SSO including the USA in 1988 and 1998, Europe 1995 and Japan/Taiwan 1996 and 2006 as well as touring Singapore, China and Korea with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Paul has been Principal Trumpet of many of Sydney’s free lance orchestras including the Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra, Sydney Opera House Orchestra, Sydney Scoring Orchestra, Sydney Bach Orchestra. He also performs with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, The Chamber Soloists of Sydney, The Collegium Musicum and The Australia Ensemble. In 2009 Paul performed solo trumpet in Morphoses Ballet production of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella as part of the Sydney Festival.
Many of Australia’s prominent composers including Carl Vine, Ross Edwards, Barry McKimm, David Stanhope, Matthew Hindson, Paul Stanhope and Alan Holley, have written works especially to showcase Paul’s remarkable talents both as a soloist and in various combinations of Trumpet and Brass Band, Trumpet and Organ, Trumpet and Chamber Orchestra, Trumpet and Piano and Brass Quintet. In 2005 Paul gave the world premier of the Trumpet Concerto “Dopplers Web” by Alan Holley with the SSO conducted by Simone Young and again in 2006 with The Queensland Orchestra.
Paul first joined the Waverley Bondi Beach Band (WBBB) in 1966 and has maintained a close relationship with the band ever since, for many years as solo cornet, then as guest soloist and now as the Music Director. Paul is quick to attribute his many musical successes to the comprehensive musical training he received in his early years in the brass band. Paul furthers his skills as a musical director as the Artistic Director of Sydney Brass, a professional brass group formed in 1958 by his father Cliff, and continues as one of Australia’s oldest and most respected chamber music ensembles.
In addition to his busy performing schedule Paul is highly regarded as a teacher and provides master classes throughout Australia. Paul has ten years experience as Lecturer in Trumpet at the Sydney Conservatorium, Guest Lecturer at the Newcastle Conservatorium and Music Camps with Pan Pacific and Youth Music Australia. In August 2008 Paul was the Artist in Residence, with Sydney Brass, at Hale School in Perth, WA. In 2001 he was invited by the Shenyang Conservatorium in China, to give master classes and recitals throughout the province and will be returning to China with Sydney Brass in 2009.
Paul lives in the inner west of Sydney with his wife, Yvette, their two children, Morley and Alana, and is passionate about food, wine, cricket, golf and the South Sydney rugby league team.
