Notes : This year, Colin was replaced by Geoff, but Jennifer decided not to come. This again left us with a crew of just seven. This trip included trips up the Bradley Branch and the newly refurbished Engine Arm. It was on the Bradley Branch where Ernie - henceforth referred to as Gandern-the-Great - did his usual magic thing on a padlock to allow us to be able to wind. Pete conspired with Ashted Tunnel to make a minor modification to the one and only remaining navigation light, and there were the 'supposed' American porn stars after Pete's body... Quite what they were going to do with it when they got it, he never found out !
Saturday 22nd May
Lunch : Wootton Wawen We had arranged to meet up in The Navigation alongside the boatyard. The boat was not ready, and we were told that it would take quite some time to be prepared, so we all went back to The Navigation for some more beer and some lunch. Once loaded, we were the last boat to leave the boatyard, and we found ourselves behind two other boats filled with total novices. Their crews seemed to assume that we were there simply to help them through the locks. Fortunately, our resident diplomat John, managed to explain in the clearest and most diplomatic of language that this was not actually the case, and that they should let us pass them, which they did. It later transpired that they thought that they were heading for Birmingham, when in fact they were heading for Stratford-upon-Avon. We wondered how far they got before they realised ?
Evening : Stratford-upon-Avon. We eventually made it to Stratford, and moored up in Bancroft Basin in front of the Shakespeare Monument. The town was very busy and rather more rowdy than we'd expected - in fact it seemed even worse than Micklegate in York on a Saturday night. Even Chris described it as being more akin to Beirut than Stratford-upon-Avon. Pete, John & Stan went to a pub, while the others went to find a curryhouse. After a few wee snifters, Pete, John & Stan rejoined the others in the curryhouse. After the curry, we then went to The Garrick. It was a completely no-smoking pub a full three years before the smoking ban would come into force in the rest of the UK, so Ernie & Geoff had to go outside for their little puffs.
