As we roll into the month of September, I want to chat with you about something that’s absolutely at the heart of our BNI Melbourne Central community: leadership. With the first of October changeover on the horizon, a lot of you will be stepping into new roles within your chapters. It’s an exciting time and truly a privilege to take on a leadership role. But let me remind you: leadership in BNI isn’t just a title you get handed. It’s something you earn every day through your actions, your behaviour, and your commitment to the values we share.

So, as you step up, think about the legacy you’re going to create. You don’t need to be the president of your chapter to be a leader or get results. In fact, leadership is about how you influence and inspire others regardless of your official role. It’s about how you carry yourself and how you support the people around you. And most importantly, it’s about leaving things better than you found them.

I always say that if you’re going to take on a leadership role, don’t do it half-hearted. We’ve got training sessions at the regional and national level, and of course there’s plenty of resources on BNI Business Builder. Attend training, understand the purpose of your role, and really embrace the skills you’re going to gain. These are skills that won’t just serve you in BNI; they’ll enhance your business and your personal life as well.

So as you think about the legacy you want to leave at the end of your term—whether you’re just starting or you’re halfway through—ask yourself: what am I doing today that will make this chapter stronger tomorrow? Let’s lead with vision, let’s lead with purpose,  and let’s all make sure we’re all lifting each other up.
