7th Grade Elective Courses
7th Grade Computer Science for Innovators and Makers/App Creators/Minecraft:
Computer Science App Creators In this course, students will need their CHARGED CHROMEBOOK daily. Students will need to bring earbuds (or headphones) and a mouse to class. The App Creators course will walk them through the coding process. Students will build on this knowledge as they progress through the course. By the conclusion of the course, they will be able to complete their own app design. This Project Lead the Way course uses block-based coding. Students can also utilize Python or Java Coding. They will have videos and instructions that guide them through the process to help them complete their task. This Project Lead the Way course is a fun course that integrates coding activities with building apps and playing them.
Computer Science for Innovators and Makers This is a course that will also require students to have a CHARGED CHROMEBOOK and earbuds daily. Students will be working with Micro: bits, LEDs, servos, buzzers, and sensors to build and complete projects that are hands-on.
Minecraft: Education Edition will be offered within the Computer Science Class for 7th graders. Students are provided this opportunity through Microsoft and their Office 365 accounts. The Minecraft Education Edition is a game-based learning platform that promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive digital environment. Minecraft: Education Edition will be utilized to engage students in the coding process as they bring abstract concepts to life.
Medical Detectives/Science of Technology/Green Architecture:
Medical Detectives: Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose diseases. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, dissect a sheep’s brain, investigate disease outbreaks, and explore how a breakdown within the human body can lead to dysfunction.
Science of Technology: Science impacts the technology of yesterday, today, and the future. Students apply the concepts of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to STEM activities and projects, including making ice cream, cleaning up an oil spill, and discovering the properties of nano-materials.
Green Architecture: Get ready to explore the fields of architecture and construction by exploring dimensioning, measuring, and architectural sustainability as you design affordable housing units!
Spanish Exploratory:
An Introduction to 7th grade Spanish is a year-long adventure that will include the following: learning new vocabulary such as school supplies and subjects, clothing, weather expressions, emotions, conversation phrases, places, animals, foods, verb phrases, body parts, family members, adjectives, household items and much more. The course will also cover many grammar skills which will help the student to be able to speak in complete sentences and engage in conversation. For example, students will learn to talk about time, the date, their pets, feelings, their health, describe people, places, and things, the weather, describe likes and dislikes, and hobbies, The course will include a more in-depth study of the Hispanic culture of Mexico such as; the Early Indian civilizations, Spanish conquistadors, presidents, war heroes, people, land, music, foods, and traditions. Students will also have many opportunities to participate in holiday celebrations, make crafts, prepare foods, act out skits, work in stations, write stories, and prepare PowerPoint projects. ( This class is not a prerequisite for 8th grade Spanish.)
Band Performance Group 6th-8th Grade:
Emphasis is on the further development of ensemble performance skills, rehearsal, and performance of intermediate-level band music. This ensemble is the performance group that plays in concerts.
Chorus 6th-8th Grade:
Chorus students will learn to use their vocal instruments to create a correct and pleasing singing sound. In addition to learning proper vocal production and technique, students will also learn music reading, sight-singing, and performance skills. Chorus also offers opportunities for students to develop team-building and leadership skills. This is a performance-based class. Participation in concert performances outside of regular class hours is required.
Morning News:
In this course, you will take part in producing a news program. The primary focus of the news class is gathering information, writing, and reporting. You will learn to research and compose the stories that will appear on the morning news. You will also create and design graphics that will be used in the news. You will have the opportunity to learn both on-air and behind-the-scenes skills. On-air skills include reading the news as a presenter, conducting interviews, and reporting on sports and activities. Some of the behind-the-scenes skills you will learn are the basics of still and video camera work, video editing, sound editing and recording, and video production and publishing.
Advanced Math 7:
Are you ready to build your math muscles? Stretch your mathematical mind? Come join us in a class designed to strengthen your thinking skills. In this course, you will learn the 7th-grade math content as well as many of the 8th-grade topics. This is a great opportunity to further your knowledge and maximize your problem-solving talents. We are looking for students dedicated to excellence and eager to grow. This course is required for those who will be taking Algebra I next year in 8th grade.
