At Venetia Valley, I regularly observed more experienced teachers in various subject areas, including SPED, ELA and Social Studies. I collaborated closely with my lead teacher, Sandra Morgan, and met regularly with my content coach, Lauren Menchavez. I helped lead three courses: 8th grade American History, 6th grade Ancient World Civilizations, and 8th grade Advisory. Being a student teacher in this particular moment, fraught with so much turmoil, forced all teachers to rethink and adapt their tried and true methods. This crisis provided a productive space for experimentation and collaboration, and the building of new skills and methods, such as technological skills, social emotional learning, and trauma informed teaching. While it has been an all around trying year, the turbulence of this moment led to rich learning experiences that I will carry with them as move forward in my career as a public educator.
I spent the Fall 2020 semester observing in middle school classrooms at Venetia Valley School as well as occasionally other sites. I spent considerable time in two social studies classrooms, but also found time to observe in SPED and ELA classrooms. During this period of time I kept a fieldwork journal where I detailed observations about literacy development, classroom management, promoting equity, and many other areas of teaching. This was an incredible learning experience and provided ample opportunities to engage directly with students. Check out my literacy observation journal on Communication page and TPE observation journal on the Collaboration page to read more about some of my insights from this experience.
During my student teaching I lead an 8th grade American history course and 6th grade Ancient World Civilizations, and co-lead an 8th grade Advisory Course. Take a look around my site to see some of the units I designed and how I incorporated 21st century skills into my classes.
