What is the difference between a Teckel and a Dachshund?
The word Dachshund originated in Germany around 1878, and means badger hound. Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany to serve as hunting and tracking dogs for small game. Over many, many years, the Dachshund has become popular as a pet, a lab dog, if you will. The Dachshund can be found in many colors, two sizes, and three coat types. According to AKC, the Dachshund is classified under two headings, standard and miniature. These two sizes can be found as short haired, long haired, or wire haired. Miniature seems to be the most popular house pet size.
The term Teckel refers to a specific type of Dachshund, a working or hunting, wire-haired Dachshund that descends from the European working hounds. These Dachshunds are held to a higher physical and field standard, and have a hunting instinct that traces back centuries, including an exceptional scenting ability.
In other words, all Teckel are Dachshunds, but not all Dachshunds are Teckel.
Why a Teckel?
Just like we did with the Akbash, we feel in love with the instinct and desire to work that we observed in our very first wire haired Dachshund. We lucked up on Winston when he was a year and a half old, not knowing that we were acquiring an awesome dog with a Teckel pedigree. I (Christina) grew up with Dachshunds and had lost my best friend, a standard smooth haired Dachshund named Baby Girl, two years previous and had finally decided that I was ready to own another. After bringing Winston home, I began researching and learning more and more about his pedigree and the true meaning of Teckel. Being avid hunters, my husband and I decided that our next step would be to utilize this blessing and learn as much as we could about the breed and using them for their intended purpose. Shortly after, we began training to track.
Summer of 2025, we located a compatible female to work alongside Winston and to possibly breed in the future. She is a feisty little beauty and has begun her obedience and scent training. Willa is their perfect fit to Winston's laid back personality. Our desire is to help support the breed. Winston is genetic and health tested, including OFA Patellar Luxation, Basic Cardiac, and Eyes and Willa will complete the same testing when she reaches the appropriate age. We will also be working toward UBT certification as well.
