Design a blended learning assessment plan that incorporates at least three different assessment types (e.g., online quizzes, interactive presentations, and peer review activities) and aligns with course goals.
Welcome to Chapter 4 on student learning assessment for blended courses! Student learning assessment is the process of measuring and evaluating what students know, understand, and can do as a result of their educational experiences. It involves collecting and analyzing data from various sources, such as exams and projects, to determine the extent to which students have met the learning outcomes and to inform decisions about how to improve teaching and learning.
Offering instruction in different modalities allows for variety in the assessment approaches—for example presentations in person and practice quizzes online. In addition to increasing variety, frequency of assessments can also increase when more formative assessments are included along the way. Formative assessment helps instructors and students both monitor progress. Students can feel better supported when feedback is provided in multiple ways.
Regardless of the modality used, it is important to align all assessments with learning outcomes (see section on backward design). The syllabus template includes a chart linking outcomes and assessment activities.

Before In-Person Sessions: Use recorded lectures, video content with tools like EdPuzzle, Screencastify, or Google Forms to gauge retention, and online quizzes or surveys to assess prior knowledge and identify learning gaps. Asynchronous discussions or reflection prompts on LMS discussion boards can foster critical thinking and engagement.
During In-Person Sessions: Implement active learning through presentations, demonstrations, and collaborative projects. Utilize short polls or quizzes with tools like Kahoot, Mentimeter, and Quizziz for real-time feedback. Proctored exams can ensure assessment integrity for high-stakes testing.
After In-Person Sessions: Reinforce learning with online homework assignments, practice exercises, peer review activities, and reflective journals or blogs to synthesize learning and set future goals.

Introduction to Padlet: Padlet is a digital bulletin board where users can stick notes, pictures, videos, and links. With a free account, instructors can create up to 3 padlets to use in blended learning without requiring students to sign up.
Assessment Tools: Padlet offers grading options, comments, likes, and votes for responses. Instructors can use Padlet for quick check-ins, polls, surveys, and to gather student feedback, enhancing engagement and understanding.
Collaborative and Creative Uses: Padlet supports group projects, team assessments, and digital portfolios. Students can collaborate on assignments, share ideas, and showcase their best work, promoting creativity and continuous learning.
Review the formative assessment techniques discussed in the chapter on assessment in blended learning, including those shared on the Cross Academy Page (in English or Vietnamese) and the tools and ideas shared in the Blended Learning Assessment Toolkit. Choose one formative assessment technique that you already use, find interesting, or would like to try in a blended learning context.
In Padlet, include the following:
The name of the formative assessment technique you selected.
A description of how you would implement this technique in a blended learning course, considering both online and in-person components.
An explanation of the potential benefits and challenges of using this technique for student learning and engagement.
Add your reflection using Padlet (see below).
