1. This campus has the same layout as what a small college would have at home. The students walk to different buildings on the campus for specials classes (computing, art, music, PE) and the dining hall. There is no PE teacher. The homeroom teacher is the PE teacher for their classroom.
2. The "playground" is the whole campus. There are two huge outside basketball courts used for both basketball and soccer. There is a sand pit on one side and and a game station on the other side. The students are given a breakfast break for 30 minutes, which allows them to go outside to play and eat breakfast. After lunch, every student is outside playing for 1 hour.
3. During lunch, the students must be quiet at the beginning until the lunch menu has been read. The students get served their food by the cafeteria workers on nice place settings. They are served a 3 course meal: appetizer, entree, and dessert. The students do not have a choice of what they get and they cannot bring their lunch. All the students and teachers eat at one time. The teachers are given a different lunch than the students are given. Lunch is from 1:15 to 2:45. If they finish early, they are to go play outside.
4. Classes are called lessons. Social Studies and Science are called Topic.
5. School is from 8:45-4:45. Teachers leave right at 4:45 because planning and staff meetings are done during the day.
6. Breakfast is after the first two lessons (classes) at 10:45-11:15. Every day for breakfast the students are given a sandwich with a different kind of meat on it like salami or ham.
7. There is no Nurse, Guidance Counselor, or Librarian. The teachers kind of act as all of these.
8. The teachers are given a 2 hour planning period on top of an hour and a half lunch each day.
9. Teachers have parent teacher conferences during school almost every week and will call the parents for just about everything-not doing homework, getting in trouble, etc.
10. At St. Paul's, there are no sports teams or clubs the students can be involved in. However, the students can join teams or clubs that are through other associations and do those after school.
11. The students learn 3 different languages every day: Catalan, Spanish, and English.
12. A typical lesson only includes a powerpoint and maybe a short video or activity. These kids are held to VERY high expectations so this seems to work well in all of the classes.
13. The students call every teacher by their first name. For example, they call me Blake.
1. There is only one building on the Spottsville grounds. The cafeteria, computer room, art room, music room, and gym are all located inside this building. There is a PE teacher for all of the PE classes.
2. There is one playground at Spottsville. Unlike St. Paul's, Spottsville has an area for all of the playrgound equipment, as well as, a huge open space for the children to play in. Spottsville also has a baskeball court. Recess for the students at this school is about 15-20 minutes everyday after lunch.
3. Lunch is a time for the students to talk with each other and let out all the energy that you can't during class. They are not asked to be quiet during this time. The students are required to get their own lunch in the line. They are given options each day and are allowed to bring their lunch. Most teachers bring their lunch or eat the school lunch. Lunch is only 30 minutes and each class has a designated time to eat.
4. We call each lesson classes and use the names of each subject as the name of the class.
5. School is from 7:30- 2:30. Teachers are required to stay after school until 3:15 each day. Staff meetings are done after school every month.
6. Breakfast is before school at 7:00. The students are given options every morning like cereal, poptarts, biscuits and gravy, sausage, etc.
7. Spottsville has a Nurse, a Guidance Counselor, a Librarian, School Psychologist, Special Education Teachers, Speech Therapists, and a Family Resource Center.
8. The teachers are given a 45 minute planning period each day.
9. Teachers have parent teacher conferences after school every 9 weeks or will have them for any special circumstances. Teachers stay in contact with the parents through different communication tools, but not everyday.
10. There are many sports teams and clubs that give the students opportunities to be involved in at school. These practices and meetings are usually done after school.
11. The students don't start learning a new language until middle school usually.
12. The lessons we teach include a variety of different strategies and learning styles to try to meet the needs of all students. Every teacher I know differentiates instruction with every lesson. We definitely make learning fun!
13. Students call every teacher by their appropriate title and their last name. For example, Ms. Williams.
The students in Barcelona are not much different than the students in Henderson. Kids are kids anywhere you go! They act the same as in they listen to the same music, watch the same youtube videos or tiktoks, play the same games, etc. They act silly, they tell jokes, they goof off, they play, all things you expect 11 & 12 year olds do. The content is also very similar. The way they teach it may be a little bit more fast paced, but the students here in Barcelona are learning the same things that the students in Kentucky are taught. The subjects here are also the same. They learn math, english, science, social studies, and special classes (computing, art, math, PE) all in the English language. Another similarity is that the teachers of St. Paul's incorporate technology in every lesson just like the teachers back home do.
