According to this data, most people like action, comedy and Sci-Fi. When asked why, the responses stated that “action is entertaining and exciting so the movie doesn’t get boring.” “Comedy is great for a casual watch” and that “a comedy masterpiece is better than a masterpiece in any other genre.”
Examples of films that the responses gave were Django Unchained, Tron Legacy, Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2049 and Shrek.
Django Unchained is set in the Wild West in 1865, it contains gore, graphic violence and is action packed, a style that Tarantino uses a lot, the soundtrack fits perfectly with the film and the visuals are striking with the use of strong colours.
Tron Legacy is a Sci-Fi film that is set in virtual reality, it contains many messages and symbolism; representation of the fascist regime to show government corruption, reference to mental health issues and showing the dark side of the human mind through power and greed. These are problems that society face today and have faced in history like with the Nazi regime, which is why people would be fascinated to watch the movie as they can relate to these issues and are interested to see the capabilities of human kind.
Guardians of the Galaxy is an action-comedy film set in outer space, it is on of Marvel’s funniest films and by successfully achieving this, it has become a favourited film by many. Referencing to a comment made by a response, “a comedy masterpiece is better than a masterpiece in any other genre,” this film rings true to this statement. Reviews on IMDb commonly state that is “one of the best MCU films to date.” It has great visual effects, a remarkable soundtrack and very likeable characters.
Blade Runner 2049 is a Sci-Fi film that is a sequel to the 1982 Blade Runner. It has incredible cinematography that is captivating to watch, it contains warm tones and cool tones for different atmospherics. The film focuses on emotion, memories and questions humanity. I will further research Blade Runner’s cinematography in my FMP research.
Shrek is an adventure-comedy film that follows a fairy-tale theme. At the time, Shrek had an impact on the film industry with its amazing CGI. It is like a parody of fairy-tale stories, it contains plenty of humour, likeable characters and the storyline is well-developed.
From research I found that those aged 38-41 years old are the average audience of a biopic, whilst action, comedy and Sci-Fi have an audience of above 17 years old. Most of the responses were aged 17-20 years old, which is probably why biopic was so low scored. Our target audience is for the younger generation as the comedy in the film will be what we find funny and may be influenced by this generation's humor, whilst the older generation might not understand the jokes. Therefore, I feel that an action/comedy film will be the best for our target audience.
I compiled the research I gathered from the colour theory question into a graph. The question asked, “what do you associate with these colours?” From the answers, I aligned the colours with what most people associated the colour with, as an example, most people said that they associated red with evil, danger and power. I will use this data when deciding what colour palette to use for my film, depending on the themes.
When showing a clip from the film Kill Bill, the interviewees like the cartoonish effect that the scene had; the crash zooms, varied shots and angles, exaggerated action. They also liked how action packed and visually pleasing it is. The switch to the black and white filter made them feel on edge because it created suspense. I am keen to use black and white in the opening scene of the movie for a dramatic introduction and I have found out that people like a switch to B&W. I also would like to use a cartoonish effect for the action, a style similar to Tarantino’s, in order to create an exciting action-packed scene.
There were mixed responses on this question. Some said that they think it is cringeworthy, unenjoyable and that they prefer serious films. Others say that it makes the movie memorable, entertaining and makes them feel like they want to dance too. Some responses also stated that it depends on the film, for example, one said they liked the dance scene in The Mask but other dances in films are forgettable and cringe. For the credits, I think it would be good to include a dance scene so people will actually watch it, most people never stay to watch the ending credits because it is just a blank screen with words that seems to go on forever. For those that don’t like dance scenes, they won’t need to watch it, while those that do can stay to watch it and it will make the movie a memorable experience for them.
Most people like the 1960s-1980s setting but it was a close call with the other timelines. Suggesting that it is a varied opinion on what era is the best. It comes down to what genre they most like, the storyline and the aesthetics. For example, the most chosen setting (1960s-1980s), is probably chosen for its comfort and light-heartedness, the bright and colourful visual aesthetic, a great soundtrack and a storyline that takes you back to an era of rapid change; breakthrough of technology, music, fashion, civil rights and counterculture.
The responses tend to find out about films through social media and trailers. For my Final Major Project, I will use social media and produce a trailer to effectively publicise the movie. For my previous FMP, my peers and I created a social media account and a trailer for the film, it is our most viewed video on our channel so the marketing definitely worked.
