Using my research, I created concepts around the genres that I had researched; comedy, action, Sci-Fi, spy and western. The idea behind the storylines were from the influence of TV shows and movies that I have watched, taking elements from them, combining them and adding my own ideas to create an original concept. I heavily researched into aesthetics so I wanted to come up with a storyline that would allow the opportunity to incorporate the Wes Anderson aesthetic style. I produced mood boards for colour palettes that I could use in the film; Wes Anderson uses bright colours to create impressive imagery. For each concept, I made a mood board based around the storyline and meshed the colour mood boards that I had created with it. For example, for the spy mood board, I added photos of visual aesthetics like the triadic colour scheme. I had previously researched into colour palettes so I had a clear understanding of what colours would work and why they are used. The triadic colour scheme is bright, vibrant and balanced, and it gives off a cartoonish look. I thought this would work well with the spy film as a cartoonish look compliments action films, I also think this colour palette would suit a professional spy and to add pops of colour.
River, Charlie and I came together to discuss our ideas as we are going to collaborate for the FMP short film. I shared my own concepts and they shared theirs. We picked apart what we liked and disliked from each concept and how to improve on them, sharing our opinions by using the Miro mind map. From what we liked from the concepts, we noted down what elements we want to be used in our film, which included a film that consists of different timelines, a mixture of genre styles, frenemy theme, character development, non-linear storytelling and we were keen to film a spy film. From this, the idea of a film about opposite spies emerged; despite their differences, they team up to take down a criminal organisation (frenemy theme). We wanted the film to contain flashbacks (different timelines and non-linear) and for it to be aesthetically pleasing so we made the characters have a signature style; Jax is punk and River is funky. We continued to develop the concept to include the elements that we wanted to be displayed in the film. As an example, including a mixture of genre styles; we made it action-packed, have comedic acting, the Chief will be inspired by the noir style, the Tokyo mission will have a Sci-Fi influence, there will be a western stare off and the hostage scene will be gory, influenced by Tarantino’s work, who we researched into.
When researching into theories, I looked into the linear narrative theory, which would help us to develop a non-linear storyline that we are keen to produce. I found that an equilibrium is important to be restored at the end of the film so the audience are satisfied with the ending. In comparison to our storyline: The equilibrium is disrupted – finding a clone of one of the spies, quest starts to restore – spies go to various locations to investigate, climax when character confronts the problem – spies meet who is behind the cloning, equilibrium is restored – the villain explains idea behind the cloning to give context. Another theory I researched into was the binary opposite theory, which helps to develop the narrative and provide an equilibrium. Jax and Stevie are complete opposites; Jax is dark and influenced by the punk style, whilst Stevie is funky and influenced by the 80s. It separates the characters based on their personality and their abilities; Jax is brawny and fearless, Stevie is brainy and cautious.
Considering the primary research, we have planned to film a dance scene as some of the responses feel that it makes the movie memorable and exciting to watch. Taking into account that some find it cringeworthy, we will make the dance scene relaxed and a realistic perception of people dancing to songs, not an over the top musical dance. In regards to what period setting most people like watching, most selected the 1960s-80s option. Therefore, the character, Stevie, will be influenced by the 80s and have a funky persona.
