Forests are full of biodiversity, containing many different species, but their defining characteristic is the abundance of trees present (National Geographic, 2022). It is estimated that all different types of forests cover about 1/3 of the land (National Geographic, 2022). Temperate forests are typically found across North America, Europe, and Asia (National Geographic, 2022). The temperatures can vary throughout the year and there is typically a lot of rainfall (National Geographic, 2022).
Statistics
About half the species on land live in forests (World Wide Fund for Nature, n.d.).
Somewhere over one billion people live in or near forests (World Wide Fund for Nature, n.d.).
Every year about 10,000 hectares is destroyed due to deforestation (World Wide Fund for Nature, n.d.).
Humans have destroyed about 40% of forests (World Wide Fund for Nature, n.d.).
Human impact through deforestation is the main threat to forests, with commercial agriculture being the main driving force (World Wide Fund for Nature, n.d.). The land and resources gained from deforestation are beneficial to us humans, giving us wood which we use in our daily lives and providing places to grow crops (World Wide Fund for Nature, n.d.). However, deforestation can lead to habitat loss and can also have many negative effects on climate change (World Wide Fund for Nature, n.d.).
