Your path towards learning the course content of Bio 45 will go a little more smoothly if we all understand the following policies. If you have any questions about any of this, please reach out to me.
DeAnza College values academic integrity as an essential component of academic excellence. Students are expected to be truthful and honest in their academic work.
I expect all of my students to be truthful and honest in their work.
Any student found taking part in any form of academic dishonesty will receive no points or grade for the academic task completed without integrity.
Having someone other than yourself take an exam or quiz
Any form of plagiarism
Giving your academic work to another student to plagiarize
Communicating with anyone other than your instructor during an exam: Talking, text message, e-mail, etc.
Looking at material (books, papers, websites, AI) other than what is permitted during an exam
Turning in another person's Diet Assignment (or any part of it), representing it as your own
Receiving exam questions from a student who took the exam (or the course) before you
Copying parts of the Diet Assignment from another person’s work
For students who are repeating Bio 45: Turning in your Diet Assignment from a previous quarter
Lying to an instructor or college official to improve your grade. I will not lie to you. Please do not lie to me.
NOTE: The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs & Activities maintains a record of students who have engaged in academic dishonesty.
Students who cheat in a class and are not caught did not earn the grade listed on their record. That is not their grade to own. Even if no one else knows it, YOU will know it.
A student who cheats on his/her way towards nursing school admission or graduation will not make it in the working world.
Cheating WILL catch up to you even if you manage to avoid being caught. Honor academic integrity now and forever.
Learning how to thoughtfully use AI-based tools course (ChatGPT, CoPilot, Claude, etc) can help you develop your academic skills. But AI results can be biased and inaccurate.
Acceptable ways to use AI in Bio 45:
To check your grammar for written work
To create flash cards/concept maps to help you study for an exam
Finding definitions of terms or help understanding a concept
Unacceptable ways to use AI in Bio 45:
To create any any part of the Diet Assignment (other than checking grammar in your writing). This includes writing your Q4 essay. If you include information in your essay that was NOT part of the Bio 45 course content, it will lower points earned there.
To get help during exams
Unhelpful ways to use AI in Bio 45:
To create what you will include on your notecard that you will use during an exam (AI is not going to know what will be helpful for you to have)
To find the answers to the questions on the practice quizzes (you should be using the course materials, and testing YOUR knowledge/level of understanding)
To fill out the Study Guide for the exams (you NEED to use the course materials, and not the general internet, which can mislead you and include information that is not part of the course content)
To summarize the Virtual Lectures (you will miss details and nuances if you read a simple summary)
You’ll find more examples of helpful/not helpful ways and guidelines for using AI in this course on Canvas.
If you choose to drop the course, you can do this through MyPortal.
There are various dates for dropping - dropping with a full refund, without the course being on your record, with a W for Withdrawal. Check the DeAnza calendar for those dates for this quarter.
If you realize you are not passing the class and it is after the deadline to drop with a W, please do not ask me to drop you. I have no ability to drop you after that date. Monitor your course standing throughout the quarter so there are no surprises in the last 2 weeks.
Often referred to as "netiquette," here is a gentle reminder of the interaction practices and rules we'll follow in all our interactions in this course.
Please read this short article and watch the very brief embedded video.
If you ever feel that someone is not following these rules, please get in touch with me to share your concerns.
