Bin Ren
I lead the engineering of the mathematical basis of statistics for imaging science, especially on extracting faint objects around bright central sources (10⁵-10⁸ contrast) for high-contrast imaging in astronomy. I am a European Fellow under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) since June 2023. I am also involved in the ERC PROTOPLANETS project (lead: Dr. Myriam Benisty) since April 2022.
Before Europe, I spent 2.5 years at the Exoplanet Technology Lab in Caltech. I obtained my PhD in Physics and Astronomy and M.S.E. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from The Johns Hopkins University in 2019. I got my B.Sc. in Physics and B.Ec. in Mathematical Statistics from Xiamen University in 2013. I also hold a Private Pilot certificate issued by Federal Aviation Administration. Beyond STEM research, I obtained an Executive MBA summa cum laude from IAE Nice in 2024 hanks to MSCA support.
In my PhD studies, I worked at the Extrasolar Planetary Systems Imaging Group in the Space Telescope Science Institute advised by Dr. Laurent Pueyo (primary, methodology), Dr. John H. Debes (Hubble/STIS), and Dr. Marshll D. Perrin (debris disks). After graduation, by Dr. Christine H. Chen in 2019 summer (GPI LP-6).
Research focus:
- Develop and apply multidisciplinary statistical knowledge to imaging.
- Data reduction and analysis methods for high-contrast imaging.
- Observation of planet-disk interaction with ≥ 5 year timeline.
- Pushing instrument limits for coronagraphic imaging.
- Quasar host imaging with coronagraphs.
