What is the Girl Scout Silver Award?
The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest honor a Cadette (grades 6–8) can earn, recognizing their ability to create lasting, measurable change in their community. Working individually or in a team of up to four, girls identify a root cause of a local issue, develop a sustainable "Take Action" project, and dedicate at least 50 hours to its execution.

The issue we want to address is the concerningly high amount of monolingualism in the United States. About 75% of Americans only know one language; however, in the European Union for example only about 35% of the population are monolingual. One reason why this is an issue is because many people in the United States don't have access to bilingual education in schools. There is no federal requirement for world language education proficiency to graduate high school in the United States. Another reason is many people do not feel the need to become bilingual because they don't need it in their everyday life. When US travelers travel internationally, many will choose to go to English speaking areas or use technology like Google Translate to communicate. In addition, many jobs in the US do not require an employee to be bilingual in English and another language.
Our team’s project idea is...
Our team's project idea is to excite young school age children about expanding their language horizons and to excite teenagers into continuing their language studies by showing them various career paths that utilize their advanced language skills. We plan to create activities for school age children, including coloring books, in person story time sessions, a recommended book list for the library to advertise, and a badge program for each Girl Scout level. We will also interview professionals in various careers where being multilingual is required or encouraged or beneficial to help teens/older Girl Scouts stay interested in their world language studies and understand benefits for their future. All of our activities will be recorded on a website for future use and to be sustainable for future learners.
