CIvic engagement and social media

A moderated discussion about civic engagement and social media. Specifically, the audience learned about about how social media can be used today to enact change, how civic engagement has been shaped by social media, and what performative activism is. Panelists included Cindy Jara, Digital Communications Associate at Reach Higher, Todd Sanders, Senior Director of Digital/Social Engagement and Innovation for UF Strategic Communication and Marketing, Cale McCall, Digital and Social Media Manager for Advocacy at NRECA, and Frank LoMonte, Director of the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information.

Community Conversations: Voter Suppression

An educational community conversation on voter suppression within Florida with Dr. Steve Noll, master lecturer in the UF History Department. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in an open conversation about voter suppression. This was a joint event with the Gator Chapter of the NAACP.

Dare to dream panel

In this partnership event with Take Action Florida, participants listened to some of Florida’s most influential leaders discuss their experiences as Latinx members of the community and immigrants. The panel included: Thomas Kennedy, the Florida Director for United We Dream; Mariana Castro, the Biden campaign’s Florida Hispanic Vote Director; Luisa Santos, candidate for District 9 Miami-Dade School Board; and Maureen Porras, candidate for Florida House District 105.

Equal Access, Period. A panel on menstrual product accessibility

This event was a moderated discussion about the Pink Tax and challenges women face with menstrual product accessibility. Panelists included Katie Diasti, CEO and Founder of Viv for your V, Debra Bennett-Austin, President and Founder of Change Comes Now, and Abigail-Perret-Gentil, Volunteer at Grace Marketplace.

FIrst-generation in leadership

This event was hosted in partnership with the First Generation Organization and HSA's Office of Political Affairs. Participants heard from several accomplished first-generation graduates who have careers in public service. Panelists included Jose Miranda, Senior Government Relations Associate at the Association of Community College Trustees, Cindy Jara, Digital Communications Associate at Reach Higher, Adam Sotomayor, Executive Assistant at the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for the US Department of State, and Dr. Matthew Jacobs, Director of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service and Associate Professor of US and International History.

How to get involved in the 2020 election

At this event, students learned about how to become involved in this critical election through voting, campaigning, and the Census. Speakers included TJ Pyche, Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Director of Outreach, Noah Fineberg, Associate Strategist at Progress for Florida, Representatives from Florida PIRGs, and Ana Cavalante, Civic Engagement Intern at the Bob Graham Center for Public Service.

Rep Gainesville: Virtual town hall

This Virtual Town Hall was a partnership event with the Freshman Leadership Council, a program of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service and Students Taking Action Against Racism (STAAR). The speakers included Adam Christensen (2020 U.S. Representative Candidate for Florida's 3rd Congressional District) and Joy Glanzer (2020 Candidate for Alachua County Commissioner for District 3). Audience members learned about local issues, were introduced to our speakers' political platforms, and geared up for election day.

Women in leadership forum

The 2021 Women in Leadership Forum was hosted by the Bob Graham Center for Public Service and the Graham Center Student Fellows. Last year’s panel featured accomplished women in the legal, health, and non-profit sectors.
