Beginning anything is difficult, especially for someone who doesn’t like change. It’s easy to end something once you set your mind to it. But starting something takes courage.
I told my friends and family for years that if I suddenly lost my job, if I dramatically changed careers, or if I retired, I would become a yoga teacher. It was always my Plan Z. But I didn’t have the courage to tell people that yoga became a major part of my life and I am serious about teaching.
Not “one day”. Now.
So in March of 2019, I started my 200 hour yoga teacher training!
The truth? I’m still terrified.
I constantly wonder if I would make a good teacher. I hid that I started yoga teacher training from my parents. I told most of my friends I was just “checking it out” and might not even teach. That it was just a hobby. Let’s not even mention the Tarot training for now… too “woo woo”.
I was giving myself an out.
I was afraid of being judged. Called out for being a fraud. Told that I would never achieve my goals.
But what I forgot: I have a PhD in Chemical Engineering after failing out of Chemistry 101.
The take home message? Beginnings take courage, but with enough passion anything is possible.
I know.. Mornings are difficult!
Some of you play a game every morning of seeing how late you can sleep in, get ready, grab a bite to eat (or skip breakfast entirely), and run to work, school, or whatever you have planned for the day.
Some of you have intentions for waking up early and starting a morning routine, but end up pushing the snooze button 6 times.
I get it! Sleep is great!
But I want to make a grand statement: Having a morning routine will change your life.
I don’t want to sound preachy, so I’ll jump to the benefits.
For me, creating a morning ritual calms my thoughts and emotions. It grounds me when my energy is overwhelming, and energizes me when my energy is too low. It sets the tone for the rest of the day. Ultimately, it allows me to show up as the best version of myself so I can have the confidence and clarity to do anything!
I have a 2 hour morning ritual.
(Disclaimer: This is my morning ritual. It doesn’t work for everyone, I know. And I’m not judging anyone who doesn’t do what I do. Take what you want, ignore the rest.)
The first hour is dedicated to my mind, body, and spirit. No phones. No emails. No news reports. I do some combination of yoga, meditation, journaling, tarot reading, dancing, listening to music, etc. The idea is to devote this time to YOU. This time is sacred. This time is for healing and preparing for the day.
The second hour is when I can check emails, social media, news reports, listen to podcasts, prepare my food, get dressed and makeup on, and head for work. What is so important outside of your mental/physical/spiritual health that can’t wait 1 hour?
The take home message? Take time for yourself every morning and you (and everyone else in your life) will thank you for it.
