As part of your child's involvement with the Better Start Literacy Approach, two whānau workshops are offered. Your child's classroom teacher will be able to tell you when the workshops are scheduled for your school.
The first workshop provides an overview of the new approach to literacy teaching for your child's classroom. This includes a brief overview of the research, and an introduction to the new style of decodable readers your child will be bringing home (you can see these here). You will also learn about how you can help your child 'crack the code' when reading by drawing attention to and playing with the sounds in words.
The second workshop focuses on other ways you can support your child's oral language and early literacy development through the decodable readers, how to use children's picture books to help your child learn new words, and follows on from strategies teachers will be using in the classroom.
