Benjamin Projects is a mentorship through sport, registered Non-Profit Organization in 2021 (NPO 262-082) but operating within the South Peninsula region of Cape Town since 2014, dedicated to fostering holistic development through sports mentorship.
Our mission is to empower young individuals by providing them with the tools and guidance necessary to thrive both on and off the sports field. Since our inception, we have developed and successfully implemented four key programmes that address the diverse needs of our community, focusing on mentorship, sports development, and food security
We have 4 pillars to our organization.
1. Mentorship 8 one 8 – Sporting and Academic Mentorship Programme
2. Cricket with Character – Schools Cricket and Afterschool Programme
3. Coach 1 on 1 – Coaches Development Programme
4. Community UP Lift – Food Security and Nutrition Programme
To create the environment and opportunities sustainably so that young people may grow holistically(Social, Emotional, Educational, Economic Development) to become responsible and productive citizens within their families, communities, and the broader country.
Our motto is "Growing in wisdom, stature, favour with God and Man."
Co-founders Roger and Lesley-Ann De Wet have been involved with youth development since 2000 within the South Peninsula Region.
In 2014 Benjamin Projects SA was born out of a desire to make a sustainable impact in the lives of the young people in our communities by engaging with them and their families at an earlier stage of their school lives and maintaining that support through to high school.
Initially focusing on our primary objective of mentoring boys from grade 3 to matric who were at Heathfield Primary or had progressed to various feeder high schools, with all of them at some point having engaged with Roger either as teacher or sports coach.
Roger is an ex-staff member of Heathfield Primary(2007-2020) one of our partner schools, the same primary school Lesley-Ann attended. His time at Heathfield Primary has seen him fulfill many roles from Teacher, Head of ICT, Head of Sport(Athletics, Cross-country, Cricket Coach), School Management Member, and School Governing Body Secretary.
Currently, we have 40 boys along with their siblings on the mentorship programme.
We walk alongside the young men and their families, offering holistic support and creating opportunities for them to grow into the potential that lies within.
The name Benjamin Projects was born out of the biblical story of Joseph and his younger brother Benjamin found in Genesis Chapter 43 verses 29-30. When Joseph was reunited with his younger brother Benjamin, he left their company and went into a private room and wept.
Likewise, we are moved by compassion for young people, more specifically young men to see and watch them grow and overcome the hurdles within their lives.
As of 2021, we have embarked on our secondary goal of delivering our Cricket with Character life skills programme at Heathfield Primary and hopefully to schools in our region where cricket is predominately not played. This now includes girls with the majority of them from the Mocke Road informal settlement as part of our Community UP Lift programme.
