Elements of CAP

In Massachusetts, the Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP) determines a teaching candidate's readiness. The CAP cycle lasts fifteen weeks and consists of a self-assessment, professional goal setting, four observations, and supervisor assessments. Candidates must complete a minimum of 125 hours as the Teacher of Record and at least 300 total classroom hours.

Candidates are assessed by their demonstration of six essential elements of quality teaching: high expectations, safe learning environment, well-structured lessons, adjustments to practice, meeting diverse needs, and reflective practice. Performance ratings are unsatisfactory, needs improvement, proficient, and exemplary. Candidates must achieve appropriate rankings in all six elements under three categories: quality, scope, and consistency. These targets reflect the Professional Standards for Teachers and indicate effective teaching practices.
