The Machine Gun Corps was disbanded 15th July 1922 as a cost-cutting measure. All of its operational records, its establishments and regimental orders were moved to its last headquarters at Shorncliffe in 1920. During the early hours of Thursday 18 June 1920, fire destroyed the records. Twenty firemen & military fire pickets spent three hours to control the blaze. The cause of the fire was recorded as being ‘unknown’. What does remain is some of the war diaries - see below.
The only remnant of that Corps is the Maguncor a Freemason Lodge consecrated 1917 & named after after the telegraphic code word used for “machine gun corps” in WWI.
A commemorative plaque stands at the Lion Gates entrance to Belton Park. Below is the war diary for the 200 Battalion MGC from August to October 1918.
Additional photographs of the MGC at Harrowby are here.
