What is a Texas State Senator?
A Texas State Senator is an elected state official who represents a large district in the Texas Senate. This is part of the Texas state government in Austin and is different from the U.S. Senate, which is part of the federal government in Washington, D.C.
Texas State Senators serve four-year terms and help make laws that affect people living in Texas.
To run for this office, a person must:
Be at least 26 years old
Be a U.S. citizen
Live in Texas for at least 5 years
Live in the district they represent for at least 1 year before the election
Texas State Senators handle state-level issues, including:
Writing and voting on Texas laws
Approving the Texas state budget
Working on issues like education, roads, healthcare, water, energy, and public safety
Representing the people in their district at the Texas Capitol
Serving on committees that review bills and state programs
Confirming some appointments made by the Governor of Texas
The Texas Senate has 31 members, with each senator representing a large part of the state. Together with the Texas House of Representatives, they make up the Texas Legislature.
In 2026, 16 of the 31 Texas Senate seats are up for election, including District 24, which covers ALL of Bell County!
