Mr. Nicolas Jan is one of the most responsible, committed, and hard- working members of our Bellaire chapter of the NHS. Since joining our chapter, he has exceeded the service and tutorial minimums each semester, and has been honored with the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award for four consecutive years. He shows leadership in extracurriculars like the robotics team and the engineering club, both of which merge his love for math and science with that of business and innovation. Outside Bellaire, Mr. Nicolas participates in the Formosan Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors, and is a student leader in the Taiwanese Youth Society. In 10th grade, Nicolas founded the Diabolo Club on campus, where he began sharing part of his cultural heritage in a fun and engaging way. Despite having no need for, nor benefit from further club involvement his senior year, he undertook the Chick Fil a Leader Academy’s application process. His attitude about “investing” in a freshman; his selfless willingness to give up valuable study and friend time to share his culture; his proactive discipline academically, through service, and in tutoring; and his continued leadership within and outside our Bellaire community, are completely consistent with the character of a servant leader. Someone intelligent, innovative, humble, selfless, and willing to bear and shoulder great responsibility for the good of others is exactly the type of person who, now that he has been awarded this NHS scholarship, represents our school, district, and the Cardinal spirit that we are trying to grow and develop in each of our members.
Miss Miranda Wang is a singularly accomplished young woman. As a freshman, she co-founded a “small” project: the Crochet- Knitting Club. The purpose was simple: teach students how to knit and crochet; the vision: to donate the finished products to mothers and the elderly; and the result: they gained leadership, marketing, and organizational experience as they expanded and led workshops. Miss Miranda also served with the Bellaire International Student Association to launch a hygiene supply drive in support of local refugee families. And in a year with many staff changes, it was Miss Miranda who shouldered the burden and responsibility of our Yearbook’s editor- in- chief position. Using the same creativity and ingenuity that allowed her to lead our National History Day club to the national competition two years in a row, she re-started the Bellaire chapter of Business Professionals of America, and founded a Health Occupations Students of America club. As an International Baccalaureate diploma candidate, she dreams of merging science, healthcare, and engineering. Valedictorian Miranda tutors our members, has led our Robotics team to its first state performance last year, and organized Bellaire’s first ever Robotics summer camp for elementary school students. As a leader for the Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States, a youth-led nonprofit organization, Miss Miranda has tutored underprivileged elementary students; served meals; organized books, clothing, and back-to-school drives for children and libraries; and donated medical supplies to countries in Africa. As a volunteer at Ben Taub Hospital, she challenged herself to communicate in Spanish, Chinese, and English to bridge the gap between patients, nurses, doctors, and staff. Her internship with the Baylor College of Medicine has her fired up about fruit flies, the fragility of life, and the value of resilience through adversity. Someone kind, caring, engaging, persistent, imaginative, and willing to walk the talk and put forth maximum effort brings honor to our school and community, and sets a high standard for us all to also rise above and choose greatness in dreams and with actions.
