My name is Pauline, I am 21 years old and I study English and Home economics to become a teacher for secondary school. I'm in my first semester at the PH Karlsruhe but I already studied two semesters in Ludwigsburg. Originally, I am from Aschaffenburg, which is a city in Bavaria.
I always worked a lot with children and teenagers at church and at different youth circus projects. Before my studies, I did a gap year at such a youth circus project in Darmstadt. Now, I am still doing Aerial Hoop, which you can see on the right. I also like to sew and to try out new sports.
As a future teacher, I think it is important to stay up to date concerning modern technology which is why I am looking forward to gather new skills and competences through this seminar and of course, the study week.
One point on our to-do-list until the next meeting was to prepare some literature. Everyone had to decide on one country that Lucy Crehan writes about in her book "Cleverland". I chose Finland and the more I read about its education system, the more I am impressed by it. I'm curious on what Esma and Rafael will tell about their countries.
Before starting the study week, we went to Edinburgh for two days. It is such a beautiful city. On our first day, we did the "Harry-Potter-Trail". As both of us are massive Harry-Potter-Fans, we just had to do it and it was great. Our guide was so funny and knew so much about the Harry-Potter-series and about J.K. Rowling. After eating the best Pizza of our lives at Zizzi's, we went to the Scottish National Gallery of Art.
On the second day we visited Edinburgh Castle and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. We did not go inside the Castle because it costs quite a lot but we still had a great view across Edinburgh from there. I liked the Gallery of Modern Art better than the Gallery of Art but that is a matter of taste. In the evening, we took our train to Newcastle where we were welcomed by a city full with celebrating people.
I loved that, due to a bank holiday in England, we were free to explore Newcastle respectively Durham on the first day of the study week. This way, we were able to already get to know the others and the region where we were going to spend a week. I also liked that although we were free to do what we wanted all day, we met for dinner with everyone else in the evening.
Alison's campus tour and the murder game were a pleasant start to our time at Newcastle University. At first it didn't make sense for me to skype with the others and talk about what everyone has done so far if we haven't done anything yet, but I think it helped me understand what everyone did in their study weeks.
VEO is a great app to think about one's teaching methods, but I'm not sure I'll use it because I think it's best to use it when someone else is running it. It's difficult to do it on your own. Although the app could be used well for teaching exams, I'm not sure if the examiner will get involved with this method. As I have never seen foreign schools or lessons, visiting Ponteland Secondary school was very interesting - it was completely different from german schools. Nonetheless, I would have liked it better, if we had been parted in groups and stayed longer in less lessons instead of visiting every class for just one or two minutes. This way, we felt quite uncomfortable inside the classes and did not really witness the lessons.
Cooking with Linguacuisine and getting to know other languages is a lot of fun - especially because you end up with delicious food. Nevertheless, I wouldn't say that it really taught me anything. Especially now, that the workshop is a while ago, I can hardly remember any words, let alone sentences. Discussing the mysteries was great (maybe because I love discussing complicated situations like those) and I can really imagine using some in class myself.
Since not so much happened on the last day of the seminar, apart from organisational matters, there is not so much that could be reflected, apart from the final presentations. We held our presentation about "Answer-Garden". There, everyone who has the link can add keywords that come to mind on a certain topic. It's great if you want to create mindmaps or gather ideas to a certain topic or something like that. In the evening, Esma and I went to the the cinema to watch the movie about Ted Bundy. Last semester, I wrote a little paper about him and this movie was just released when we were in Newcastle.
Our departure day started relaxed with a coffee near our hotel and continued with a coffee at the airport in Newcastle. After we checked in our luggage we had plenty of time because our first plane was half an hour late. What made the whole thing uncomfortable was the notification that this half hour delay would make sure that we would not get our connecting flight in Amsterdam. This gave us plenty of time for another two or three coffees during the additional 4 hours of waiting in Amsterdam. Until we finally arrived in Stuttgart in the evening, we didn't know for sure if our luggage, had also gone through the flight change. Fortunately everything worked out so that we could finally fall into our beds.
