Todd and Courtney
Over the course of the 2019-2020 school year, students from Saint Louis Middle School will explore our role in the polluting of planet Earth. Students will be introduced to the issue of sustainability by examining the use and disposal of various forms of plastic in their homes, school, town and water shed. Using inquiry-based lessons, students will examine the effects plastic has on the land and water in their community. During these lessons students will develop a plan of action to increase the awareness of plastic and its proper disposal. Saint Louis Middle School will be collaborating with Bullock Creek Middle School in a pollution challenge. Each school will collect and weigh how much trash they collected from their school's campus. The winning school will receive a TRART trophy made from trash collected on the campus. In conjunction with trash collection, students will have the opportunity to enter a contest to share with our community how trash is impacting the land and water. Students will be able to submit work that highlights their message in one of the following formats: infographic, presentation, poster, report, flyer, brochure, social media, or video.
Students will be introduced to an Inquiry based lesson on the concept of Sustainability. Students will receive multiple writing prompts to introduce the topic of trash, and specifically trash in the Pine River. Students will be collecting trash from the school campus and town. During this time, T.S. Nurnberger Middle School will be competing with Bullock Creek Middle School. Students will be competing to see which school collects the most trash. T.S. Nurnberger will also be looking at the types of trash we collect. Students will be completing five or six writing assignments in their English class. While in science, students will complete two or three writing assignments. Science classes will also complete a multimedia project related to pollution/water. Both groups of students will have the opportunity to write a proposal for a solution to cut down the amount of trash in the Pine River, which will be a contest. The contest for trash collection will end around Earth Day. The school that collects the most trash will be awarded a trophy made of trash from the school's property. The conclusion of the trash collection contest will also conclude the solution proposal contest with the winning group's proposal being implemented for trial in the 2020-2021 school year.
