WHAT IS AN ECO SCHOOLS CERTIFICATION?
The Eco Schools Certification is a key part of the National Wildlife Federation’s educational outreach program. In their Schoolyard Habitat Handbook, the NWF describes their mission:
The mission of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is to unite all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world. The National Wildlife Federation believes that in order to save wildlife—and ourselves—we need to ensure that all Americans have access to clean air and water, safe communities, easy and equitable access to nature, and protection from the ravages of climate change. These basic needs, equally necessary and urgent for all people, are foundational to bringing the conservation movement and ethos into the 21st century.
At Brompton, this mission resonates deeply. We see it as part of a national—and global—movement to live in balance with the natural world. The Eco Schools framework aligns beautifully with our own commitment to learning, growth, and stewardship.
Within the Eco Schools framework, sustainability isn’t a buzzword. It’s student-led, community-driven change—actionable, measurable, and visible. Yes, it’s a challenge to strive for certification. We know we’ll learn just as much from our failures as from our successes.
We invite you to join us in this journey—to observe, participate, and grow with us as part of our Eco Schools community. Together, we can help create a world where both people and wildlife thrive.

ECO SCHOOLS CAMPAIGNS AND ACTION CARDS
The Eco Schools program offers a set of overarching Campaigns that guide participants through a purposeful sequence of actions. In our first year, we were drawn to the Schoolyard Habitat Campaign, which invites schools to make a real impact by creating diverse, thriving habitats for wildlife.
Schools taking on the School Yard Habitat Campaign select a series of Action Cards—each one outlining a specific ecological project.
What sets the Eco Schools Program apart from other school-based environmental programs is the way it builds planning and leadership skills directly into the work.
Currently, we are engaged in forming our program and scaffolding student leadership. We'll post about the outcomes of our efforts during the second trimester.
